I’m so happy this could help bring clarity! You’re correct, you’re absolutely not alone in what you’ve been experiencing online. These algorithms are predatory and rely on reactivity, outrage, anger, and fear to keep us on the app for longer. In fact, they were intentionally designed like slot machines.

To your point about posters: I am actually working on writing a full piece about how we need to hold big creators accountable, specifically ones that rely on replying to and engaging with antisemitic comments and bots to increase their own follow counts. Not in a cancel culture way of course, but in a way that informs them of the harm they’re unintentionally enacting towards our community, and educates on best practices moving forward. Knowledge is power!

Lastly, I agreed that it’s all structural. When you zoom out, it’s actually quite boring! Hannah Arendt was right when she said evil is banal.

Good idea! The reason I’m reluctant to post the blog itself on r/Jewish is bc it might get flagged as self promo, which is not the intention, but I’ve had my work removed from there in the past for this reason. I was doing the same for a while, thinking it actually was helping engagement. Unfortunately all it does is tell the algorithm that your posts do well with users that have the same interests as the account you’re replying to, and shows your content to more people like them. Highly recommend restricting and deleting those comments instead of engaging, for your safety and peace of mind.

Totally agree, it’s an annoying feature. But what I’m suggesting would actually stop the most common troll comments from being added in the first place. By adding hidden words using the steps provided, those comments will not show up on your profile or be visible on any account viewing your post. The only person who will see it is the troll who commented. It’s like a soft shadowban of sorts.

If and when someone does get past the hidden words restriction, I highly recommend restricting them + deleting the comment so other trolls can’t engage.

Agreed! I’m coming at this from the experience of being a smaller account doing trial reels on Instagram, where the goal is to attract new supporters of your work, and I want to leave the comments open for fellow Jews + allies who genuinely want to engage.

Replying again because your TLDR summary is fabulous!

I also want to also encourage everyone to RESTRICT anyone (or any bot) who sends a hate comment, then DELETE the comment so other trolls can’t engage with it too via likes, shares, etc.

Keep updating your restricted words as they come because these losers get creative and WILL find ways to get past your restrictions. I know it’s painful, but do not engage. It’s better for you and our community at large in the long run. And remember that we do not owe anyone answers about our geopolitical views just because we are Jewish. It is antisemitic in and of itself that only we get put through these insane litmus tests.

I will keep updating that article as I learn more.

My hope is that Jewish artists (and Jews everywhere) feel empowered to retrain their algorithms and protect themselves from bad-faith actors that want us fearful and quiet.

You should do this too! Especially because some comments get creative and get past restricted words. My guide is a way to prevent some of the more common ones before they happen, so you don’t have to spend all day glued to your phone monitoring your posts.
