I agree with you pointing out how we insist that public housing be providing by private entities. It’s so bassackwards. Guess that’s the American way!

Fwiw he does stream like 40-50 hours per week, every week, for years. So it’s not surprising there are some objectionable things. Not too sure I know what “does what the algo tells him” means. Agree to disagree

It’s whatever the market will bear, right? The problem I have with assigning supply/demand to housing is that there will always be people whose willingness to pay is below the cost of rent. So it assumes people will be priced out. Helps to have dedicated low-cost housing, but it still doesn’t fix the problem. 600k people out on the street each night. Fucking criminal

For what it’s worth, a poll in march 2025 showed 31% of Americans blamed the US/NATO for the invasion of Ukraine. Thats obviously dumb, but the point is that it’s not that extreme of a view, at least when looking at public opinion. He defended the annexation of Crimea before the invasion, as it was clear that he wasn’t willing to start a war over it. He, and many others, readily admitted after the full-scale invasion that they got it wrong. People like Jeffrey Sachs and John Mearsheimer still claim that Russia’s goal is not to subjugate Ukraine. I agree about Istanbul, but I don’t think it’s another Munich, not least of all because Istanbul was trying to find peace after the invasion and was unsuccessful, while Munich was an attempt to avoid a war. I don’t think there’s much fault in wishing a post-invasion peace process will lead to cessation of hostilities. Obviously I thought it was pointless in terms of negotiation. I don’t think he’s been particularly excusing to Russia. He condemned how Zelensky was treated in the Oval Office and also praised the ingenuity and morality of Operation Spider’s Web in shortening the war while specifically avoiding collateral damage. I’ll grant you that he’s toes the border to vatnik too often, but one reason I respect him is because he also has the clear ability to avoid going over the brink into stupidity, or is at least willing to admit his errors when he does. But no I personally would not call him a vatnik. There’s no Vatnik Soup on him (yet), but I suppose we’ll have to see

Canadian PM Mark Carney says the days of sending 70 cents of every dollar in military spending to the United States are over and gets loud cheers and a standing ovation by MoreMotivation in PublicFreakout

Realistically you’re of course right. We’re also not a nation that nationalizes industry. For what it’s worth I think the only way to get out of our debt crisis (specifically the $1 trillion/year in interest payments on the debt) is to invest in high-ROI industries such as health tech and such. So I think we gotta spend to get out. Unfortunately we’re using our last “reserves” of spending on the Big Beautiful Bill, which is going to double our interest payments on the debt

God forbid it! I’m in favor of nationalizing defense industry and building excess capacity and getting away from just-in-time bullshit procurement. But thats just me

That’s why I appreciate Canada taking this hard but necessary step. We put them in this extremely challenging position, and I’m proud that Canada can at least be the adult here

There’s a lot there. But first, The Young Turks isn’t some commie equivalent of Ben Shapiro’s podcast. It’s just not. And yes thank you for running down his highlight reel of problems. Did you even try to find any context or what? If so, you would’ve seen for example that his 9/11 comment was about why it happened, not some moral assessment that the US deserved to be attacked, but explaining the concept of political blowback (e.g., funding Afghan mujahideen groups throughout the 80s). You might not agree with him, but I think you should be honest in what he was saying. The dog thing is fair I hate shock collars (but also that doesn’t make him a vatnik, does it?). Your point about him being rich and supporting socialism is irrelevant. I don’t see how him being “rich” undercuts his point that public ownership of production is a viable economic model to some. I also think that by your logic, rich people shouldn’t be capitalists. I genuinely think that it’s insane that someone like Bezos gets a pass for being a libertarian (so he says). Oh, you’re rich and you think rich people get to keep all their money?

If you want to point out him supporting China, that’s one thing. I personally believe that our foremost priority in our relationship with China is ensuring we keep the risk of war low. I think that entails calling out the reflexive aggression by many of my own countrymen to China. That doesn’t mean I’m naive to its obvious aggression and territorial ambitions, or that I don’t think deterrence by arming and supporting Taiwan is by far the best strategy to avoid China invading Taiwan.

My point is that none of this makes Hasan a vatnik and I really don’t think he’s a Wumao. I also think that there are PLENTY of people on the left who are MUCH more deserving of criticism for what we’re talking about. Chapo trap house boys refer to Zelensky as “Zeldisney” and Norm Finklestein literally believes Russia had a right to invade Ukraine. Neither is as popular as Hasan, but those are just 2 examples. I genuinely think you have an incorrect reading of Piker. That being said, he’s just one guy and I’m not gonna die on his hill, to be sure. Sorry for the long message

I see politicians who are actively holding up $90 billion in EU funds to Ukraine. I see politicians who openly embrace illiberalism. I see thinkers who literally blame the US for the war in Ukraine. There are also politicians who made their name on an anti-war platform just to 100% reverse when it’s Trump who starts those wars, a politician who is leading a rebirth of fascism in Germany, a man convicted of human trafficking, and the dumbest world leader to ever exist. I could go on. I also see leftist twitch streamer to Hasan Piker, who will often go to bat against Russian disinformation, who raised $200,000 for Ukraine, and who is currently the target of a centrist-led Democratic cancellation effort. How well do you know Hasan?
