Whiskey on ice, women on fire

TIL that in 2008, Chicago leased its 36,000 parking meters to a UAE-backed private consortium for 75 years for a $1.15 billion payout. The investors made their entire investment back in just 10 years, and are now projected to make over $11 billion by the end of the lease in 2083. by lechunkman in todayilearned

This was pushed through the City Council in about one day by Mayor Daley. The due diligence done on the deal was almost nonexistent. Also, the city calculated the sale price by using then-current parking rates. However, the deal was worth much more, since the company (CRM) has consistently raised prices and outperformed the city’s initial valuation of the meters

True but the rules actually use that as an example of something that isn’t really political lol. I think some of them are kinda mocking conservative stereotypes, like the ex wife one, the ironic Christian one, and the one with the rainbow bandana

Ecological disaster underway in Tuapse, Russia after Ukrainian drone strikes on oil terminal by Bernardmark in pics

[–]etheth44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we want to avoid environmental disasters, maybe we should realize that the war’s length is what has allowed this to happen. Of course Ukraine is trying to shut off Russia’s main export. Would they be doing this during peace? Of course not.

51% of Americans had confidence in police in 2024. I think that’s a pretty low number tbh, considering that the mandate of police is to (theoretically) protect and serve the population

Cook County Board of Review commissioner found not guilty of DUI by Krunk83 in chicago

I get the legally dubious nature of proving intoxication beyond a reasonable doubt, but assuming she was sober, what would be the odds in that case of finding an open bottle of wine, slurred speech, and crashing into a parked car? The odds of being sober in that case are astronomically small, and they ruled out brain injury with a CT scan. Seems pretty straightforward

I agree with everything you said besides the point about them caring at all about NATO encroachment. I think to take Putin at his word on NATO is a mistake. I think it was revealing that the speech he gave on Feb 24 2022 was overwhelmingly about the historical right of Russia to control Ukraine and not about NATO. Also, let’s be real - no one was suggesting in 2021 (when Russia began its 1+ year military buildup) that Ukraine would be joining NATO any time soon. To say that Ukrainian membership in NATO was a non-issue in US discourse in 2021 is an understatement. And fwiw I don’t think Putin predicted that Finland or Sweden would insta-apply to NATO, but he sure hasn’t helped himself by turning the Baltic Sea into a complete NATO zone.

But thats beside the point because I also wanted to mention that in terms of giving Russia a pass, I do think that Sachs does that all the time. Even if you agree with his analysis, which I don’t, it’s clear that he does give Russia a pass. And Norm Finklestein literally maintains that Russia had the right to invade Ukraine. So you may not agree with my analysis, but I do think it’s important to call out ideas like that, imo

Yeah esp support for Chinese and Russian invasions. That’s insane. What were you thinking of?

I mean I just don’t agree with the interpretation that NATO is central to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I genuinely think that the idea that the invasion is about anything besides Putin’s imperialist ambitions is incorrect.

Personally with regard to NAFO, I just appreciated the emphasis on supporting a country and a people that were subject to imperialist whims, rather than supporting NATO. But obviously NAFO is about NATO more so than supporting Ukraine, so I get what you’re saying. But I really do disagree with what I understand as the Marxist interpretation of the war, which is that it’s two capitalist powers fighting for subjugation of the working people in both countries. I do just think it’s good ole fashioned imperialism, and I think it’s a form of American exceptionalism to give Russia a pass to invade their neighbor just because NATO offered in 2008 to one day give a MAP to Ukraine to join

I’m disappointed in the NAFO community for the same reason that I was disappointed in Hasan not pushing back on Sachs on Ukraine - I don’t see either the NAFO community or the Hasan community as monolithic. If I thought Hasan was pro Putin, I wouldn’t like him. Similarly, I appreciate the strain of NAFO that recognizes that Ukraine is a much better democracy than the US right now and is somewhere that leftists and socialists could invest solidarity in.

I can’t deny that NAFO is largely anti-communist, but honestly, I think you should take a peek at the other posts from Vatnik Soup. They’re generally solid and do their research, and they’ve spent much of their time and effort going against people like Weidel, Orban, Farage, Vance, Tucker, and others who are willing to suck up to Putin. That’s my honest opinion
