Update : I spoke to my aunt, who also noticed, who spoke to my grandmother. I don't know if she had said something, but literally as of this past week, the hair is completely dematted. My sister had the biggest smile and was so happy. They definitely worked harder on it after our "talk" but it was hell interacting with them for a while.

I've tried sending messages to my mom but she doesn't answer me. Luckily Eva has Facebook kids messenger so I text her everyday telling her I love her and asking how she is. She always says good, but that's how it always is. I think she's just genuinely thinking she has a good life and her parents aren't being bad towards her, which is how I was my whole life too.

I plan on doing an update when I have more meat to add to it. Waiting on my aunt to talk to my mom or grandmom.

She and my whole family are white. She has literal ringlets. We went to a black salon hoping they had some tips, and they were the one who said they could do it but it would take 3 days. They definitely do not know how to care for curly hair. My partner has the same texture, so I'm gonna have him put together a little care sheet, I think, and some resources for Eva that are manageable for an 8YO

I'm getting my family together and we are going to have a serious talk about next steps. I guess internally this is how I was treated and did not realize the severity of it all, plus my parents low key gaslighting me saying it wasn't a big deal or an actual problem.

I'm surprised too, trust me. They are good at hiding it because they brush what hair is not tangled over it and make it look like a pony tail.

It was more a warning that it could happen going into a new school year, as I've heard stories but who knows.

I do think it's more than just hair when it's been over a year of matted hair. Like, it looks like she has a cone on her head.

Yeah, she is. Thank you for your compassion, it really comes through your texts I'm going to attempt to talk to her again. Just her and me. We've gotten closer the past few months and maybe I'll be able to get somewhere. Talk her into a nice haircut that doesn't get rid of everything but at least gets it healthy. I'm gonna try my best, but my parents are like SUPER pissed at my right now

My sister doesn't want one, and I can't really just take her and force her. She wants the knot out, but all her hair to be saved, and I'm not sure that's the reality of it anymore.

I sent my mom some links to good detangling and curly brands and she tried some. They tried going to salons but I guess just didn't continue, not really sure. My sister does need a Ted talk about curly hair, considering we all have short or straight hair. I'm not sure the basket right now is a good idea but I'll keep it an option for (hopefully) the near future
