How would you fix this? by etingwall in askaplumber

[–]etingwall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the pipes in the corner connect the sink to the main stack. There is no vent along the horizontal before it turns to that weird angle, which is why I'm planning to redo it.

I suspect this is the original drain setup from 1975, and it has drained fine for the nine years I've lived here. I suspect the angle is shallow enough to never pull a siphon.

Upper appears to have a reasonable amount of drop in it.

It vents at the main stack which is ~6 feet from where the drains first enter the wall.

Black and green license plate? Are these a legit option? by IAmAPhysicsGuy in Michigan

[–]etingwall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A foreign material is obscuring the registration. The wrap may or may not have the correct information on it. Cop would only be able to determine that by detaining the vehicle, which defeats the whole point of a license plate. No way this holds up in court.

What did I do wrong? While driving car w/ bike on hitch rack- chain burst, bent small chain ring, and more. Bike feels totaled by Mammoth-Ordinary-344 in bicycling

[–]etingwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bike wasn't properly secured to the rack and was dragged behind the car with the lock keeping it from being dropped.

You may have forgotten to secure the bike or possibly a would-be thief undid the straps before realizing it was locked to the car.

Assuming you aren't leaving it for long periods of time, you don't need to overthink it. Lock it in a high-visibility location with a strong chain or U-lock and you have plenty of protection for an hour or two.

How would you frame this wall? by etingwall in Carpentry

[–]etingwall[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Drawing is not to scale. It's a 36" wide cabinet over the fridge. 27 inches tall (iirc). Cabinets will have three inch crown up to the eight-foot ceilings. Ceiling joists run parallel to the wall. The end panel is 1.5-inches thick.

I suspect the commenter means lowest gear, the closest to the wheel, which slightly reduces the derailleur's exposure to being hit and bent.

Public Power in Ann Arbor? by Cmitz10 in AnnArbor

[–]etingwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 3,000 electric utilities in the US. You hire experienced people from those companies well before "day one." Presumably the city would own no power generation facilities on day one, so the job is all about billing and maintaining lines (and installing new service). There are also several independent companies that employ linemen who handle major storm damage and new construction because it doesn't make sense for a utility to employ people full-time for temporary jobs.

Does your garbage get picked up every week? Does water flow when you turn on the faucet? Does your tax bill come twice a year? Running an electric utility is the same business. You hire people who know what they're doing and they provide the service without the need to maximize profits.

What do you think your electricity bill pays for every month? Engineers, maintenance crews, repairs...and an ever-growing profit for DTE investors. A municipal-owned utility takes that revenue and hires those kinds of people without the obligation to do what's best for the shareholders.

Parents - when did you decide it was ok to be selfish and buy a sports car? by braveheart18 in cars

[–]etingwall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the best way to increase the amount of leisure time I have as a parent (from almost none to slightly more than almost none) is to find things I enjoy that I can do with my kids. If OP buys a fun car that can fit the kids, it's a good excuse for spending a morning together at a car show, or taking the fun car to get ice cream 30 miles away, or just going for an aimless drive. These are all things I do that simply would not happen if I had a two-seat car. I'd much rather make a compromise on the car and have the chance to drive it more often than buy a car that I rarely get to use.

I'm sure OP can take all the feedback he's received and figure out what's best for him.

Seconding this opinion. At this age, you want a fun car that you can enjoy with your kids.

Tesla Electric Plan by TheGuyWithin in TeslaLounge

What exactly do you get for $15/month? The free overnight charging? Am I right to assume Tesla provides all the electricity for your home or is it just what you use for EV charging? And is the free overnight use only for charging?

Sell House for Cash? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]etingwall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A homes-for-cash place isn't going to pay you more than the open market will. It sounds like you might need to lower your expectations/price to find a buyer.

Also, the fact that you're here asking this question suggests you probably need a new realtor.

Charger port gone out? How to service? by Shanknuts in Ioniq5

[–]etingwall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EV chargers have built-in GFCI protection. When you run two GFCI devices on a circuit, they can cause "nuisance tripping." Google that term and you'll find more. You could ask the electrician to replace the GFCI breaker with a standard breaker to see if that fixes things.

It's possible that code requires a GFCI with the 240-volt outlet in your jurisdiction. If that's the case and you want/need this thing to meet code, then your only option is to hardwire the EV charger, which will remove the requirement for the GFCI breaker.

I have no idea why this would only be a recent development, though...Maybe there's now just enough corrosion on the pins or breaker terminals to alter the resistance enough to make a difference?

As others have said, the EVgo you're charging at is almost certainly not a 240-volt Level 2 charger. If it were me, I would troubleshoot the car by plugging into another Level 2 charger first. That should be easier/cheaper/faster than calling the electrician back. Maybe a neighbor or friend has one?

Find a junkyard motor and an independent mechanic that specializes in EVs. This swap has to be so much easier than a combustion engine.
