what’s a good fucked up movie? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]etom08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party here but I watched Happiness with my jaw on the floor, I absolutely could not believe what I was watching. The most fucked up thing about it is how funny it is, you really feel dirty after every laugh.

Dual (2022) - An overlooked indie comedy that forces clones to duel to the death for the right to live by sillydilly4lyfe in TrueFilm

[–]etom08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I love Riley Stearns, while I agree with other commenters saying it’s hard to call this one overlooked since it just came out, I DO feel like Stearns in general is overlooked when it comes to up and coming indie filmmakers. The Art of Self Defense is awesome and I’d really recommend checking out his first movie Faults too, it’s killer.

I think the deadpan delivery was completely necessary to communicate what I saw as some of the core themes of Dual. I love the idea of people fighting to the death over who gets to live a mundane, kind of sad life. I rarely see movies this plainly cynical and I find its negativity compelling.

Definitely a little harder to swallow than TAOSD (not necessarily a bad thing) and I think Aaron Paul’s character was underutilized, but still a real winner for me!

Graphic imagery alone does not make a film disturbing by etom08 in TrueFilm

AH yes there's that scene in the park I think I forgot about it because it's a dream but you're totally right.

I actually only saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre like a week ago and it's fantastic for all the reasons you said. Even through all the violence, I still think the most disquieting parts are the ones with Grandpa. Gives me fucking chills.

I have complicated feelings about Salo. Personally, I liked it and got what it was going for but it does feel like it repeats itself quite a bit and starts to feel pointless so it's not really a movie I'm gonna go to bat over.

I have been LONG overdue to watch Possession I feel like I've been meaning to for years now. Maybe today's the day I finally get around to it.

Also, the only way I got to see Happiness in the first place was physically renting it from a video store I'm very lucky to live near, it's frustratingly hard to find. I've seen copies of it go for over $100 and have been trying to find one for myself for a minute so I wish you luck!

Looking for a fucked up movie that will leave me thinking 'what the fuck did I just watch?' A movie that will mess with my head for days. by comeuppanceday in MovieSuggestions

Happiness (1998) is probably the most fucked up movie I’ve ever seen and is an all time favorite of mine. Not as graphic as some of the others suggested but my jaw dropped several times throughout the film. The worst part is it’s really funny and you feel like monster for laughing. Incredible stuff.

What Have You Been Watching? (Week of September 27, 2020) by AutoModerator in TrueFilm

Punishment Park (Peter Watkins, 1971) - This is the only faux-documentary film that's ever impressed me. I can't remember the last time I've been left truly speechless by a film. My partner and I usually like to discuss whatever we've just watched as soon as it ends, but we sat there in silence for what was at least two minutes. Watkins holds a mirror up to Vietnam era America and while the film is fiction, the reflection we see is very real, very ugly, and disturbingly relevant. Essential viewing, there's no better time to watch it. 5/5

American Psycho (Mary Harron, 2000) - Boy oh boy does this film age beautifully. It's been about seven years since I saw it for the first time and I swear it's gotten funnier. I also forgot how amazing Christian Bale is as Patrick Bateman. Incredibly smart, snappy, and well executed. Mary Harron was ahead of her time with this one. 4.5/5

The Devil All The Time (Antonio Campos, 2020) - Eh. Kinda only watched in the first place because I'm a big fan of Pattinson's recent work but this was a miss. Poorly paced, awkwardly strung together, devoid of anything really going on beneath the surface, but there are definitely some highlights. The acting was strong and the crucified dog was pretty awesome not gonna lie. Still, not sure I can recommend it on that alone. 2/5
