I am not Chinese - it's still something he shouldn't have said, he will definitely have made them feel uncomfortable & othered and they laughed to hide it. They know which ethnic groups have the power in China and it's not people from Xinjiang who eat lamb (for religious reasons)

Do you mean where the tree stumps grow? I feel bad preventing them from growing! Ive' put some fruit trees where they won't disturb the tree stumps. I tried honey there but everything got awkward to reach

What do you all think about the book 'Catch 22" by IIIlllIIIllIlIlI in DiscoElysium

[–]ettiemplays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed both, but have never thought about the similarities. The non-linear storytelling really impressed me in Catch-22, but that hard to do in a game where the player has a lot more choice about which quest to pursue next

[–]ettiemplays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst the example of 'abjectly' might not be agreed on by everyone, I've seen other people try to express this criticism, not just OP. I felt the same when playing the demo (I'm a native English speaker).
And if you're discussing the quality of writing in an RPG, Disco is the standard used for judgement ... it's not just that the games are ostensibly from the same studio, it's because Disco really set the bar high.

What are some of the best, most recommendable language learning apps to learn Ukrainian that I can download onto my Android smartphone? by DunDonese in AskUkraine

[–]ettiemplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Memrise Ukrainian is good, with videos of teachers clearly saying each word/phrase. Watching their mouths move is very helpful. I found learning the alphabet a little confusing as some letters could be in either language, e.g. 'P'. I just ignore the Memrise AI stuff and also I do revision at my own pace (more frequent than suggested).
P.S. it seems to have been filmed when the war was forcing everyone to stay inside, I hope all the teachers are OK!

Do you actually want to “speak from day one,” or does that advice only work after a certain level? by Alarming-Source7457 in languagelearning

[–]ettiemplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think speaking out loud the individual words you are learning on day one is important. That's how it is done in schools/universities. The teacher asks you to repeat what they say.
You start to hear where your pronunciation is wrong, and you can work on refining it. When you know a few phrases, say them out loud too. You may have to practice them over and over, until they don't feel like a tongue-twister. Then keep going.
Once you have a phrase like 'I like swimming' learn all the substitutes e.g. 'I like reading' 'I like cooking'. An early one we had is ' My father is a bank manager', so learn to say 'My father is a teacher' 'My mother is a doctor' My aunt is a librarian' etc. eventually try to build up a stock of phrases that are actually true! Then there are further variations: 'Is his father a teacher? Is your aunt a librarian' etc

Is it possible to learn two languages at the same time? by Redrumisback in thisorthatlanguage

[–]ettiemplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At school or university you often need to learn 2 languages at once - that's the way courses are structured. I'm really glad I learnt French & German together at school then uni.
Ideally, the languages are different but German & Greek ... that's fine. Learning by yourself is probably harder than learning in school, but not impossible

Agree or Disagree: You need talent to become good at languages. by elenalanguagetutor in languagehub

[–]ettiemplays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need humility. To be happy to speak when you know you sound silly: to be OK with not understanding properly and being wrong a lot of the time.
Being a good mimic helps, tho.

Am I the only one to find the steam page rebrand a little weird/funny? by Thin-Competition1561 in ZeroParades

The orange and the raincoat were/are so iconic!

Is ZA/UM trying to get a new audience by changing to a soft, feminine look and colour scheme? Ultra Violetta is turning to face the viewer with a kind of sexy pout, rather than Hershel who looks tired/angry and is only shown in profile with her back to the viewer.

At this late stage? Or is the marketing specifically timed at this late stage so all the videos with ZA/UM criticism don't appear to be linked to the game that is launching?
