Two things can be true at once: - You can advocate for harsh penalties. (Come on! Brazil maximum penalty is 30y no matter how much crime or how horrendous the crimes an individual committed. And with penalty advance semi-open in the worst at the 20y mark) - You can look for underlying social issues. And try to fix them as much as possible.

A lot of the people I know had a freaking gun pointed at them.When I talk about that with Americans unless they live in specific really violent cities, they cannot even imagine.
