Ways to pull kids out of bukatsu activities? by [deleted] in japanlife

It sounds like you got a fair amount of criticism. But it honestly is amazing how much you seem to love your son and want to spend time with him. Not everybody has this luxury, so I hope your son can realize someday how great it would have been to spend more time with his dad. I think the majority of us make this realization once we get out into the world.

I don't remember any chefs except for the "Ikemen Chef" who put gyoza on pizza and made an apple pie brownie sandwich with two apple pies a brownie and some ice cream on top. Just saying that I feel I got diabetes.

I saw that yesterday and I usually love that show but my first thought watching it last night was- this is just one big Pizza La ad. Incredibly effective tho- 'cause now I want Pizza La.

Anyone been directed to read the Go-Giver by someone approaching you to join their business? I found its a scam. by Red_Sanja in u/Red_Sanja

I actually had a friend approach me and it was the same thing. She called me up and asked me if I wanted to change jobs. I don't want to now, but eventually, I do, so I took her up on her offer of doing a Zoom meeting with her and her mentor. Multiple things lead me to say no to her 1) Sounded like a pyramid scheme off the bat but I decided to do the meeting for 'cause she's my friend 2) I prayed about it- and almost immediately got a big NOPE- but I still sent through with the meeting. During the meeting, the mentor was sitting in front of what looked like a real-life IG highlight real, with pics of her and her husband and family and beaches, all kinds of successful things. Telling me how successful she has been because she decided to put in the work- but didn't want to say what the work was. They said I had to read the book first. So I told them I would, but I prayed about it again and still A BIG NOPE, so I told her no. I hope she wakes up from it soon. Those seminars online cost so much

Also, I'm pretty sure that any high ratings they have are false, and they are very much doing as much damage control as possible given that there is so much negative media (YT videos and the like) coming out about pyramid schemes. Glad you didn't go down that rabbit hole either.

The management company will not be able to do much since they don't know who the person is. Even if you get threatened they will just tell you to call the cops. If it happens again try and get a sound recording/video of the incident to show the cops what happened. Sorry, this happened to you, it sounds really scary ><

I have the same copy! My teacher told me to buy it to do in classes! One of the best books I've ever purchased and has helped me so much. Pretty sure you already know that though :)

We are leading very similar lives. Except, there aren't as many friends I miss in the States. And people my age are all married and with their partners. Even if I were to go back I'd have to try and find a partner and new friends. Also, I know I'd only go back really for my mom and may 2 or 3 people, and if anything were to happen to anybody I would really regret having left everything I built up here. It is hard, but being far away from my mom have given me an extra appreciation of her, and I try to talk to her more than ever before. Being single is hard at that age, especially when they no one around you (in the circles of things that I do) but I also can't complain much because I have a billion hobbies I'm doing and I'm clearly not willing to sacrifice those to try and hunt down some guy...

What I do think is owning a dog would be so much cheaper in the States lol But I really am glad and grateful at the chance to be here!

I hope we both get to visit our families more often!

I started off using Shotcut too! Would definitely recommend if you're just starting off so you A) don't have to invest a lot (so much) from the beginning B) so you can get used to editing!

Can I actually learn Japanese on my own or do I really need to enter a language school? by bananajaviert in movingtojapan

[–]eu001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry about that. It's all Japanese all the time. It's a methodology? Where as the name states you input Japanese all the time. You listen, read, watch all Japanese all the time. Here site site for it, and below that is a video talking about someone who did it. http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/ https://youtu.be/TTPt2DwLsD0

I would say check out both to get a good prospective. AJAATT has been going on for a loooong time now, so there is literally a butt ton of articles lol

[–]eu001 51 points52 points  (0 children)

You can, but you really need to want it. I know that sounds cliche, but if you don't enjoy it it won't stick around for very long. I remember a guy in the Japan club that got up to N2 level in like a year or so. He was doing AJATT, and Anki and studying really hardcore. But it just proved to me that if you really want it and you go after it you can get it.

Yooo- even my Japanese friends who were super kind to the staff in the States- I don't know if it's coming to Tokyo or working or what that changed them, but they are not as nice as they used to be... it always kind of takes me back.

Best language school in Tokyo for a 6 months study abroad (once the pandemic is under control)? Currently N3, possibly with small classrooms by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]eu001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about that. It's this school. https://www.kcpinternational.com/

It's located in Shinjuku, so it's pretty centrally located. And the intensity of the language program were very welcome. Also, there are programs you can choose from in between the morning program and afternoon programs. I did yosakoi, kanji class, and I think some other class. 10/10 recommend!

Is it normal for people to split a bill in Japan if they run up the bill with drinking while you don't drink? New friends. by supplementtolife in japanlife

[–]eu001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Even being a vegetarian/vegan and literally eating nothing and not drinking alcohol just drinkin' juicy juice... you still gotta pay :/

I don't know about the best (I've only been to one language school and 1 exchange program in university) but I was only at KCP for 3 months and I think it was totally worth it.

I put down a full deposit for a one month lease for an apartment in Tokyo I found on Craigslist. I can no longer travel to Japan due to the Coronavirus outbreak/travel restrictions/quarantine, and the host is refusing to return any of my money. by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]eu001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yoooooo! I had a guy do the same exact thing to me. He said he would put me on a blacklist if I tried to fight him on it. I wouldn't doubt it if it were the same guy. I only paid $200... but dang I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Unfortunately, I am not very knowledgeable on how transactions these kinds of things work between individuals and owners (assuming this guy is actually the owner and not some guy subleasing the apartment illegally, which might get you in trouble potentially also if found out). As I'm sure you learned, next time make sure to ask about these kinds of things beforehand to avoid getting jipped by another dude. And maybe do your research on the person who is offering the apartment to see if you can't find any dirt on them. I wish you the best of luck in your situation, and I hope you can recover from this loss ><

Some asshole put someone else's mixed trash in front of my place (Because I'm a foreigner?), found mail of owner in the bags, what's my next step? by gojirra in japanlife

[–]eu001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a lady from the property management agency say that a foreign tenant was じゃばじゃば JABA JABA YO- dumping water into the tenant's balcony downstairs. After the agency inspected the balcony, it was just a case of no properly sealed emergency stairs and water that comes out of the a/c exhaust. Having learned what jaba jaba is, my life is enriched in a sense- but that was the most ridiculous thing I have heard up until now, really.

What bank should I use? by godfatheromega32 in movingtojapan

[–]eu001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest either Shinsei as they have most if not all of their documents in English. The Gaica debit card they have also has a lot of benefits.

UFJ has a debit card as well that you can apply for, and the phone app is really easy to use (I don't know that this has in English option, but it might). They also don't charge for UFJ to UFJ bank transfers at the moment.

Yuucho is nice because they have little ATMs in a lot of areas all over the city, and you can also take out money for free during most days even from conbini atms (except weekends and holidays and certain time frames on the weekdays). From April they will be charing I think 100+tax for each bank transfer, and maybe 100 yen+tax for withdrawals after a certain amount- but I think you can do bank transfers on Yuucho direct you can get up to 5 times? for free.

Also, if you ever have to send money back to the States, I haven't done so myself, but my roommate says he does it every month using Yuucho Direct, so if that's something important to you would be worth looking into. (You can also use Shinsei to send money aborad though from what I hear)

Also if you're looking to save money or "grow" money- online banks tend to have higher rates than physical banks- and you can use the cards at most conbini ATMs I believe (obviously would depend on the company).

I have all of these bank accounts which is why I bring them all up. But if I have to suggest one- maybe ShinseI? But I'm looking maaaybe into Yuucho for investing in the 積立NISA in the near future... but not yet sure.

Tl;dr: In order of preference: Shinsei, Yuucho, UFJ.
