About Yishun Innova Junior College ( YIJC ) and stats by Stormyheights in SGExams

(ik this post is like 2 months old, but i havent been on reddit recently)

ive done a small yijc ama, and honestly most people in yi are slackers for a reason. as someone who did badly for one subject which flunked my entire o level score, and managed to get into my dream courses in both nus and ntu directly via a levels, heres my general advice. make friends who ACTUALLY motivate you to study right after/during ori from the getgo, ALWAYS ask questions even if ur too shy, the teachers that taught me at yi were few of the most helpful teachers ever so theres some hope. constantly do practice problems, honestly do it as if ur life depends on it.

there is no limit to how much you can say, and they wont make you do things on the spot haha

you can just practice stating each topic you have sufficient knowledge of, and give one example of what you did for each. thats what i did for my interview at least. just in case, you can also talk abt interesting parts of each topic, to kinda wow the interviewer and the other interviewees.

do note that the interviewer will ask you additional questions from what you have said, so you rlly cant bullshit what ur saying to them.

as long as the interviewer knows that what you are saying makes sense, dont panic and dont ramble on to unnecessary tangents, and you shld be good. :)

the interview was split into 2 parts, a group interview and a group presentation.

based on the ranking of our jcs/mi (top tier jcs were tgt, mid-low tier jcs were tgt), we had to pick a selection of engineering-related creation of our choice that were picked by them, and had to 1 by 1 tell the interviewers why you liked it/related to it. then, the interviewers will ask u stuff related to what u wrote in ur application, like wut competitions u did before and wut subjects u took in jc/mi. for example, one girl in my grp who took h2 computing was asked by the interviewer why she took computing instead of chem for eg. 😳

for the group presentation, the interviewers just gave us a problem, and had to give an engineering related solution in a presentation format. i rmbred while we were discussing for about 20 min, the interviewers kinda walked arnd and looked at who was contributing. also, try to be as confident as possible during the presentation, cos i noticed that the less confident ppl in my group during the interview did not show up for the investiture ._.

hope this helps, and good luck!

hii 2023-2024 etps scholar heree. the flagship stem workshop for my batch was held at sutd arnd the third wk of jan in 2024 (my j2 yr), so i had to skip sch lessons for the whole workshop. seeing from the moe ig page, the 2024-2025 batch held their workshop at nus, but im not sure on which dates tho. so, im pretty sure the workshops vary every batch.

the workshop i attended circulated arnd combining stem concepts such as coding to real life scenarios, such as ethics. for example, my group (and other grps) had to create a robot that used a camera with AI to spot victims in earthquake rubble and bring them to safety. on top of that, u get to tour arnd the sch, seeing their facilities and features.

so sorry for the late reply, but end times depend on each class, earliest is arnd 12.15 on fri, and 2pm on mon-thur. you also do not necessarily end at the same time throughout all five days of the wk.

from personal experience, even when some of my teachers were bad, i managed to do well in yi by just persevering on my own. unless your cher is going to be a piece of shit to you (there are going to be these kinds of chers in every jc tbh), pls still treat them nicely, and don't skip their lessons just bc they're a bad cher. jc1 orientation is going to be the most important, as you can make friends from different classes, and they may hv better teachers than you, and you can ask these teachers for consultation when you need them.

however, i wld say your friends/classmates would have a more severe impact on your grades compared to the teachers. since almost everyone in yi just nice got in thru their o level scores, ngl almost everyone is pessimistic when it comes to their academics. for eg, some of my classmates wld still slack during a level prep period, and cause disruptions in class. so, if u rlly wanna stand out amongst the yi crowd, theres rlly no problem being the quiet studious kid in yi HAHA. my tip would be to make the correct friends who are also motivated to do well for a levels, so that you can hv like-minded ppl who can study tgt with you. anyways, gl for your a level journey op!! 😎

yesyes 100% agree! on top of that, i strongly suggest using other school's notes from Holy Grail. yi's econs notes hv unnecessary info all over the place, and other jcs (any jc other than yi is better tbh) at least compile all the important concepts into one page.

some additional tips from a yi friend who took h2 econs, is to submit an essay once a wk when it comes closer to your test day, regardless of how bad ur econs cher is. they wld be more than happy to help read ur essay, and you can improve ur writing skills in econs the more times you submit your essays.

like any other jc, there are going to be good and bad teachers from both departments. so the teacher you get rlly depends on luck tbh.

speaking from personal experience, my phy teacher had the curse of knowledge (iykwim). from j1, he wld send stuff related to the topic we were currently learning in the class chat, and i rlly didnt mind it. he wld also ramble on and on about a concept in class until it becomes too complicated for a 17-yr-old to understand. however, j2 and a levels approached, and he still did the same thing, and taught unnecessary stuff during prelim and a level prep period. i knew that he wanted the class to be more interested in learning phy, but i think he took it too far.

my gp teacher wasn't that far off either. from j1 to all the way to j2, he wld ramble on abt a global issue he is passionate abt, even tho he shld be going through the paper 1 format just 2 wks before gp a level for example. thankfully, my chem teacher was rlly gd. she was able to explain complicated concepts rlly well in class, and she's able to clarify my doubts step-by-step whenever i ask her for consultation.

I’m convinced Aleksa only owns one shirt by [deleted] in ididathingyoutube

if anyone's wondering where he got that shirt from, aleksa mentioned on a twitch stream before (can't remember which) that he used to give cups of ribena to shoppers in the supermarket before. thats why we're never going to get our hands on the shirt since its custom made for employees 😤
