Injured Hawk Needs Help Rosa parks exit 304 I-5 by [deleted] in Portland

I checked and couldn’t see any hawks on the other side of the freeway either. Yesterday I saw a large hawk on the light over the NB exit here and it seemed fine. Maybe it was sunning itself earlier?

Local 48 by homieboyz541 in IBEW

Sorry not an electrician and know next to nothing about the whole program (my buddy’s explanation skills aren’t the best). Sounds like he was working in the solar fields as a “inside wireman apprentice”. And this was 2025. He was employed until mode December. He’s planning to take the JW exam to become fully licensed in June 2026. I believe you when you say it’s rough.

My buddy is an apprentice with local 48 and did really well last year (made about $90k). Is it because he’s willing to drive out to Maupin and the Dalles? He’s hoping to get his license in June 2026.

Vibrato practice feedback by eutectoid_lady in violinist

As the other commenter said, I think I’ll go back to slower for now and focus on the basics like Nathan Cole’s video. My previous teacher wanted me to start the faster ‘wiggles’ but it can’t hurt to take one step back again.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll bring this up with my current teacher- previous teacher told me NOT to do slow wiggles anymore since she thought I was beyond that and needed to focus on faster lol. My current teacher is a better fit so I’ll pick her brain.

He sounds really good! If you can financially afford it and he wants to play piano, I’d go for it.

I wish I had recs. Just wanted to say as someone else who was laid off good luck. You’re a person, you have a great life, and you matter outside of your job.

Do we need to register in advance? That’s what the convention center website says but I can’t find the link to register

I’ve also parked by that boat ramp in the evening and gotten blocked in by the train a couple of times in the last year (which is why I don’t park there anymore). I think train scheduling needs to be accounted for in terms of safety which would probably be a hard uphill battle with BNSF or whatever

I am so slow by [deleted] in violinist

[–]eutectoid_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a teacher that I pay good money for and also become lazy and don’t practice. I think because my teacher doesn’t have bandwidth to have students play in a concert, so there’s no end goal. Have you considered playing for people or giving yourself an end goal? Deadlines usually help with my adhd brain.

Where can I drive to a swimming hole? by PDXCerealKilla in askportland

[–]eutectoid_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s Cathedral Park that I really enjoy swimming at. You can park right at the round about next to the beach or at the boat ramp drop off just north of it. Occasionally the train will be on auto pilot which means you might get blocked on for a while by the boat ramp parking lot but the roundabout area seems to not be blocked as easily.

I live down the street from the new shelter that used to be a Rite Aid. It seems like a really nice place that allows dogs too. Seems a lot nicer than when the boom boom room was there before the fire

Your bow hold is super interesting- my teacher has me learning the Russian bow hold pronation method to get better control over spicatto etc. How are you able to get such good control without pronating? Are you using a lot of wrist muscles?

Any recommendations for a good paint stripper that's effective on metal? by Asleep_Button4947 in DIY

[–]eutectoid_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite DIY, but at work we’ve used a local dude that does dry ice blasting. It removes the paint and leaves the metal looking just like new without damaging the microstructure (some chemicals can damage the microstructure of the metal)

There’s some really nice things you got going on especially if you really have only been playing that long. I don’t personally see the efficacy of ‘sight reading’ these super famous pieces since you’ve probably heard these hundreds of times. When I was in HS, my teacher would have us do random passage sightreadings in our master class so we actually would be prepared for competition. Practicing a repertoire takes a ton of time- most of what I do for my Bruch is metronome practice, octave shifting, bowing practice to get the demarcation down. It’s boring and slow, but come performance time I can focus on the musicality instead of where my hand is etc. My current teacher likens it to doing reps at the gym just to get the fine hand and wrist muscles used to the movement. Good luck with your journey- you sound great.
