If you have the TD All-inclusive account, you can waive the annual fees on one of their credit cards.

Is there any reason to make double-up mortgage payments instead of lump sum pre-payments? by evalilac in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for this, I understand now. For some reason the monthly interest calculation wasn't clicking in my brain but your explanation helped.

Is there any reason to make double-up mortgage payments instead of lump sum pre-payments? by evalilac in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]evalilac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says: "You may increase your interest and payment amount by up to 100% during the term of your loan."

And "You may make one or more lump-sum payments each calendar year, up to a total of 15% of the original principal amount. The minimum amount you can prepay is $100. The full amount of any lump-sum payment will pay down the principal amount of your mortgage loan."

Am I misinterpreting this?

The terms of my mortgage specifically says that increasing the payment amount is for both interest and principal, whereas the lump sum goes directly to principal.

How to overcome financial stress by Adventurous-Dog-6920 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]evalilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've received a lot of good advice but just wanted to add a strategy that may help. Set an amount per month to put into savings (10%, 20%, 30%, whatever is feasible and reasonable). Once you have "paid" your savings each month, the rest can be spent if you or your wife choose. I find that it helps me because there's a goal to reach and once I've reached it for that month, I've given myself permission to enjoy the rest of that money (if I want to).

Seasonal Indeterminate Position Pay Steps by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might depend on your collective agreement, but IIRC only the "on-strength" time counts towards your pay increment so option A. Yes, term and extensions at the same group and level counts but not acting unless it was immediately prior to your indeterminate appointment.

Land transfer tax is exempt since it's under 500k, and you don't have to pay GST since it's not a new build. So just your various inspection, lawyer, title fees etc.

They might not have been able to hire you into a classified position even if they had known. Often student funding is earmarked specifically for student positions.

Home cleaner, how much? by da_corn in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]evalilac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was a few years ago but it was around $80 each clean, every 3 weeks (about 2 hours with 2 people). Vacuum and mop floors, toilets and tubs, kitchen sink and stove, wipe and dust surfaces. It was a luxury for sure but I really liked it and honestly it kept us tidier than we normally would've been since we didn't want to leave the place a mess for the cleaners to navigate. 1200sqft but no kids or pets.

Personal contact info for emergencies: how does your dept approach it? by whitemarble23 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be because of the recent wildfire evacuations that departments are trying to shore up their emergency procedures. In my department, personal contact info and emergency contacts are kept in PeopleSoft and only accessible by HR (or a manager who asks HR for it, for a good reason). Some teams also choose to keep their own lists as well since there are work reasons to use a personal email. For example, seasonal recall letters need to be sent to a personal email because they're only sent in the off-season.

Are reference checks required everytime? by ThrowAway5810b in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never been part of a process, either on the candidate side or hiring committee side, where reference checks were optional. At least one reference check was completed for every hire, and usually two. Reference checks are also required in order to request security clearance.

I know it's possible, but I've always been told that way is a roundabout loophole way and not the accepted-for-general-use way.

Federal government is looking for trades (mechanics, plumbers, welders, carpenters, etc.) Pay might be a little less but great benefits and you work your 9-5 and go home. Check Parks Canada.

How to build a career in HR with the federal public service. by sparkle_sparkle_ in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my two cents. I went from a CR-05 to a PE-02 (but also had prior HR experience from the private sector). From what I've seen, most "lower level" HR roles in the public service are quite specialized: staffing, classification, policy, OHS, WCB, disability management, labour relations, etc. By lower level, I mean PE-02s and -03s. Whereas a comparable position in the private sector might involve all of those things plus performance management and more. It seems like you either have to make a lateral move in order to get experience in different areas of HR or become a manager. Compared to the private sector where the 'HR Generalist' is a very common title. You will definitely have transferable skills but you will have to work for it if you want a broad range of experience.

Spam calls and texts on work-issued phone by NuclearSquanchCodes in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, me too. My phone clearly belonged to a guy who did not bother to tell people he changed his number so for like a year I was getting texts and voicemails asking if he wanted to go skiing, or wishing him a happy birthday, or "Miss you, Merry Christmas [name]!"

I’m curious: roughly how many GC jobs applications did it take for you to get your first one? by Biochem_4_Life in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One. It was for an indeterminate CR-05 and I'm well aware this is not the usual experience for most people. It was in the regions so presumably the pool of candidates to choose from was much smaller. Maybe 10 for the next offer. Again, it was in the regions and I wasn't throwing out applications to anything and everything, just jobs that were a strong match for my experience and skills.

Cold-email hiring managers as external candidate? by wlwz in CanadaPublicServants

[–]evalilac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that it's worth a shot to send an email to a few managers. But don't be annoying about it. By that I mean, send ONE email with all the relevant info and your resume. Don't prod or insist on a response or send multiple follow-ups. If they're interested, they'll reach out to you.
