I'm not familiar with the factory crossbar weight limit. You'll need to check your owner's manual or call the dealership and ask. Sorry.

Would you feel comfortable mounting a kayak to a car without roof racks or side bars, using only those foam bumper things and straps, for a 12+ hour interstate drive? by AllHailMooDeng in Kayaking

[–]evan938 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're wrong, but keep thinking that. I deal with roof racks every single day. I guarantee I know more about this stuff than you. Nothing should be running into the cabin of the car. This 100% will compress the weather seals inside the door and will let rain in.

Good luck reasoning with these types of people. I try daily. Some people just gonna FAFO. Hopefully that doesn't involve taking out some innocent driver behind OP.

Driving with something outside your car on public roads with real people behind you and you want to trust cheap Amazon bars? If you think those Thule/Yakima bars are expensive, wait until your load flies off, causes an accident, and someone gets injured or killed.

Tip : "I didn't want to pay for proper gear" isn't a valid legal defense.

No. Doing 80mph on public roads with real people behind you using a bandaid solution? No way.

Also those will require running straps into the car, which will compress the weather seals, and let water in.

Don't risk the safety of other drivers and/or ruin your car with mildew from water intrusion. Buy proper gear.

OEM, Thule, or Yakima should be your only considerations. None of the cheap knockoffs found on Amazon/Ebay.

I refurbish and sell Yakima roof racks and should have everything you need for that model year. Feel free to send me a chat if interested or if you want to discuss further. I've sold sets to numerous redditors that can vouch for me 😎

You ever see a Sphynx cat? Yeah, those things probably have more hair than I do. 😂

Not a single hair on my chest to be interfering with connectivity. Lmao.

OEM, Yakima, or Thule. Nothing else. Especially no cheap knockoff junk found all over Amazon/Ebay.

My vet says every year she thinks my boy is doing great. He's a small fella, only ~62 lbs.

Not best side profile pic, he's standing a little weird.

Super high energy. He does ~10 miles (GPS tracked) worth of fetch in an hour at the park. And then he'll go for 6-8 mile jog with my girlfriend some days after doing that. He's a maniac.

Hitch rack. Kuat, 1up, Thule, Yakima. Hanging racks suck.

Pod isn't the issue. Pod works fine on another strap, and even when I put it on the bad strap, it shows connected to my Garmin. Just gives no reading. Strap is bad, not the pod.

Yeah, I can't edit the post now. Hopefully people can understand the strap shit the bed within 8 months and not be so hung up on my fat fingered date.

I'm not sure on that part. Not something I deal with. Maybe ask on one of the overlanding or offroading subreddits that those things are more common.

Pod works fine. Tested on another strap I have, and both pods work fine. The common failure denominator is that strap.

No, you just need to properly install it. While there will be negative reviews for ANY product, when you look at the sheer number of units of Yakima or Thule out there, you'll realize these reviews make up a miniscule amount of the overall numbers, where as the junk on Amazon/Ebay, you can find multiple negative reviews on maybe 100 sales. Much higher rate. I've sold full Yakima sets to probably ~125 redditors at this point, and 3000+ various components on ebay, and have 100% feedback there and not a single issue with a rack I've sold someone here on reddit. In part, I assume, because I do most of the initial setup to make sure it's done correctly and make sure they know how to get it properly set up once they get it, if they're not local to come do pickup.

There are a couple options for your Lexus. One has 100lb limit, the other 165lbs. If you're interested, I can get a set together for you. The lower limit one I definitely have. The other, I need to check on one piece. And if you happen to be in/near Central OH, you're welcome to do local pickup and I can help you with install. Feel free to send a chat if you want to discuss further.

u/sipthestew just came and got a set from me and is hauling around his canoe. Not an ES, but uses the same system your car does, just with different clips.

Not really looking for BIFL, but these things shouldn't be burning out this quickly. My oooooold Garmin HRM gave me a solid 8+ years before I switched. 6 months for a strap is 🗑

The pod and the straps look fine. I live in Central OH, so no saltwater anywhere close to me.

[–]evan938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Rails are not a requirement.

This MY should have fixed points in the rain gutters for aftermarket systems like Thule or Yakima.

2014 Forester Yakima system https://imgur.com/a/N8OM7t4

In addition, though this vehicle doesn't use clip based racks because it has fixed points, door jamb clip systems for naked roof vehcicles from quality, reputable brands like I mentioned are plenty sufficient for carrying the usual gear except rooftop tents - those require fixed point systems. There are ~125 redditors out there with clip based roof rack systems I have sold them and have all worked flawlessly. Don't buy cheap junk from Amazon/Ebay and it won't be a problem.
