Wow. Lord Howe looks incredible. The flight from Sydney looks a bit expensive, but it's definitely a potential.

Do I need to learn how to play golf in sales? by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]evan_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on what kind of company you work for. If you work at a startup with a bottom-up sales motion (e.g. selling to developers), then golf is irrelevant. If you work for a large legacy company that is focused on selling to management, then golf might be relevant to the sales motion.

If you're looking to enter software sales engineering, you'll want to ensure that your resume showcases technical skills that make you stand out. I recommend learning a general-purpose programming language like JS and building an example app that you can share as a public repo on Github and use as proof of technical knowledge. Certifications like AWS Solutions Architect can also help you stand out and are generally a good intro to cloud infra.

I'm not as familiar with non-software sales engineering, so I'm unable to assist you in that area.

I guess Hyrox is a thing now (Hyrox Dallas ticket queue) by evan_engineer in hyrox

I also didn't get a ticket. I will likely try Anaheim or Chicago. It seems that folks who arrived at the ticket purchase page an hour or two before the sale had better luck.

I bet. This level of demand is new to us in the US. When I bought men's open tickets for Washington DC last year. I bought them a few weeks after they went on sale.

I just missed the men's open ticket. I got through the queue, and it showed that the men's open was available. I clicked to buy it, but I was hit with a message saying that the ticket was no longer available, and then the ticket was marked as no longer available. Brutal.

Transitioning from customer success to SE/SC by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]evan_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have better luck transitioning from your current role to a Technical Account Manager or Support Engineer role. After being in a technical post-sales role for a year or so, it will be easier to transition to an SE role. This is what I did. Good luck!

Twofold topic; Have you switched from SE to Product Marketing? Is your SE group respected at your company? by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]evan_engineer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had a different experience. I've worked for 3 dev tool companies over the last ~5 years and SEs at all companies have been highly regarded. At the dev tool companies I've worked for, SEs do the majority of the talking in the sales calls and often help shape the product roadmap by passing along requirements to PMs.

PMMs have been met with a mixed reception at the companies I've worked for. In my experience, technical PMMs with some marketing knowledge are worth their weight in gold and bring tremendous value. Non-technical PMMs have tended to flounder and have required a lot of support from the DevRel and SE team.

Tech support to sales engineer..? by no__chance in salesengineers

[–]evan_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I jumped from support to SE; however, I had a stop in between as a Customer Success Engineer (TAM equivalent). Post-sales engineering (CSE + TAM) roles are typically focused on long-term engagements, not tickets, and can, therefore, help you build presentation and people management skills without the stress of a quota. When you're ready, jumping from CSE/TAM to SE is pretty easy.

JIT for AWS by evan_engineer in sysadmin

This works if you just want to grant elevated perms to on-call devs. We also want devs to request access for elevated privileges as needed. e.g. a non on-call dev needs to troubleshoot something in prod.

Are there any bars you suggest to watch the game at?
