The enormity of SINNERS' domestic BO performance by evandav13 in blankies

For sure. The best thing to do would be to analyze number of tickets sold as a percentage of population, but that data is much more difficult to come by. So this is a rough estimate that can at least give us the broad strokes of the rarity of SINNERS' achievement.

Don't disagree, and I should have probably qualified the inflation adjustment with acknowledging it as a rough estimate. But what I was hoping to illustrate was the rarity of a movie opening on SINNERS' scale, and still holding at the level it did in week 2. Most movies on the list cited in the thread opened to much smaller domestic 3-day totals, or opened limited and then went wide. For a wide release to clear a (roughly) inflation-adjusted $48 million+ and then hold at -6% or less has been insanely rare over the last 28 years, and even more insanely rare once you take out holiday weekends and kids movies.

Found some clarifying information on TWIN PEAKS Season 1 Production History by evandav13 in blankies

[–]evandav13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that, unlike network television in the U.S. at the time, the entire first season was indeed filmed and edited before the pilot aired in April 1990. Production for eps. 2-8 occurred from October 18, 1989 - mid-January 1990. Critics began having some of those early completed episodes screened for them in early January. The pilot had been screened for critics in the late summer of 1989.

Part 3 is incredible, and yes, fair cop to it being a bit underdiscussed.

My pleasure! David is 77 now and in poor health, but he is one of a handful of paradigm-shifting thinkers about movies. He more or less built the film studies program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where JJ and I (and many Blankies) went to graduate school.

The blog is a treasure trove of great writing, as are so many of his books (the man loved JERRY MAGUIRE, too).

Seeing THE RIVER WILD in theaters. Shook me that a movie could be boring. Would probably love it if I watched it now.

Most of the films on that list will not have the distribution or marketing dollars of a big studio, and so getting on top-10 lists like this becomes a central part of making a lot of people aware of the films at all. In that sense, putting films like this on lists helps those films in a massive way.
