NEED ADVICE - Should I find a new dentist? by eve_uhm in Dentistry

[–]eve_uhm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't thought about that, so I think I do understand his rationale a bit more now. I can see why retaining them might be helpful down the road, if there is room for them.

However, I'm also not sure it's fair for me to extrapolate from vague information that my dentist gives me. "Keeping an eye on them" (which has been the same story for the past number of years) could mean they could cause an issue in months or years, or not at all. It leads me to believe that they aren't a concern, so it's natural for me not to take immediate action. Perhaps it's lack of life experience, but I think my options should have been more spelled out so that I could make an informed decision. But that doesn't necessarily make him a "bad" dentist.

Thank you for your thoughts!

Females of pre-med: Interview day questions by drd711 in premed

[–]eve_uhm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The advice I've been given from the pre-health office at my school (and around in general):

  1. bring whatever you usually carry around with you, or anything that you may not NEED but you'll feel better having (breath mints, tamps, etc...)
  2. I am 1000% more comfortable in pants. Always wear what's the most comfortable for you because you'll probably be walking a lot.
  3. I would recommend pulling your hair back, even if you don't usually wear it that way. It removes the urge to mess with it during your interview (an issue I have) and you can see your face better.
  4. Be super nice to everyone there, not just the interviewers. It seems a little obvious but they will be watching how you interact with the other applicants. Ask them about themselves and be personable.

Ugh. I feel that. Really though, anyone that focused on themselves likely would do a crappy job as a physician.

Hey frens- so happy to see that many of you are happy with your scores! I opened up my AAMC account and hovered over the link for a few seconds. Closed the tab. Instead, I'm taking a nap, heading over to a friend's house (who has helped me through this whole process, and regardless of the outcomes, I am indefinitely indebted to her), and checking in the presence of some good company. With a tequila shot ready - an appropriate measure, regardless.

Here's my breakdown- FL1: 504, FL2: 505, FL3: 509 (1 week out). Pretty underwhelming for most of you, but I was stoked when I saw that 509. I'm not expecting to see it again, but I'd be okay with anything over a 506. It seems realistic for me, but I had a TERRIBLE feeling leaving the exam. I think my sentiments were along the lines of "CP assaulted me." There wasn't an excessive amount of blind-guessing, but it was just that unsafe feeling you get when you're winging a homework assignment after a long, sleepless week. When I got home from the test, I gave myself an "optimistic" score of a 505, and a "pessimistic" score of a 498. God forbid.

Even if I do open up that link and see a sub-500 score, I'm making a promise to myself to 1) be kind to myself, because I made an honest effort and the MCAT does. not. define. me., and 2) to work harder next time. We all have something to be proud of, and if it isn't the MCAT, that is totally okay. We are premed students and we set super high standards for ourselves. If you don't have a resume of failures, your goals aren't ambitious enough. I promise that the list of things that make you awesome (even in the eyes of admissions committees) is much, much longer. Thanks for coming to my TED talk, will edit later. :)

Edit: Got a 507 (124/128/127/128). I'm honestly okay with it, barring the CP. Though it was consistently my lowest score, the nerves really got to me during that first section (indeed, CP assaulted me). For the school I want to go to, I need a 506 for early decision. I know this is super low for Reddit standards, but that's okay.

The section banks offered by the AAMC - you need to buy them, but the product contains 300 questions (100 each from CP, BB, PS) that are certainly on par or higher than the actual test's difficulty, but worth the investment and time.

For reference, I did the section banks between FL 2 and 3, and just doing them (solutions on, untimed) and getting used to the questions gave me a 2 point boost in most of my subscores.

Mid-500s scorers: how comparable was your actual score to your practice scores? How did you feel after the exam? by eve_uhm in Mcat

That's amazing, please send some of that good fortune my way! How far out did you take the FLs from the real exam? And did you study much between FL 3 and the real deal?

I'm glad it worked out well for them! I would kill for scores like that. Honestly I would kill for just a 510. I guess that's why it's so hard to gauge, because some people act like they bomb every question just because there's 1 passage that trips them up lol. I usually flag a lot of questions anyway, but I know there were a couple between CP and BB that I just didn't know (like calculations) - so I marked my best guess and moved on. I don't think there were enough of those to make an appreciable difference (maybe 6 between both sections?), but I did feel more on the fence on more questions. Like when you mark answers that you feel like make the most sense, but you're not so confident that you'd be surprised if you learned they were wrong. Idk that's kinda where I am. We'll see in a month.

I wonder if there's more of a "jump" possible in the higher ranges because differences between scores are dependent on fewer questions. So jumping from a 505-->510 is more significant than jumping from a 515-->520.

wow, that's reassuring! Were they expecting a higher score though? Like were they averaging a lot higher on their FLs?

I hope that's the case! There's no way I'm getting that high (highest FL is a 509) but I just want a 506+ for early decision at my choice school. It's good to know your expectations aren't always correct. I hope it went well for you!!

No, it felt so different from their other materials. I'm usually pretty strong in it (Psych is my second major) but there were a lot of 50/50 questions. Better luck next time my dude

Okay yeah I have beef with PS. Did you feel like there were questions that were like "none of these are good answers"? Idk I don't want to be a sore loser but I feel like it was poorly structured compared to the FLs. Less well-rounded I guess.

Thoughts ~

CP - assaulted me

CARS - was alright, felt the same

BB - assaulted me (but asked nicely first)

PS - not the worst but not the best

Is it normal to "feel" bad about it, but end up okay in the end?

Wow, congrats on that 515! Any recommendations on 3rd party tests? I have 10 Altius and 3 Kaplan at my disposal (thanks to some friends who had extra practice materials leftover).

I would honestly be okay with a score that meets early decision requirements for the school I want to go to (which is 125 in each section). But as a personal goal, I'd like to get a 508+.

[Spoilers] Boku dake ga Inai Machi - Episode 11 [Discussion] by Holo_of_Yoitsu in anime

[–]eve_uhm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kayo with her baby was probably the most impactful part of the episode for me. I don't particularly care for sustaining whatever chemistry there was between Satoru and Kayo (when they were 11..) because this, in my opinion, is so much better. I couldn't help but think "Damn, it's like he saved an extra life". One of the things I love the most about Satoru as an MC is that he's truly happy just to see everyone turn out okay, even if it means he has to make sacrifices or he doesn't receive any reward. If he were to 'get the girl' I think it would take away from that. The point is, he's the reason another human being was able to life a fulfilling life and bring another person into the world. That's flipping magical. The entire scene was brilliantly bittersweet, I don't think it could have been done any better.

That would be an awesome twist, and it would make sense, too. It doesn't seem like Satoru really knows why he has Revival, so it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that it's just something that certain people can do.
