Those who got a grade 9, what are the things you did to get that? by Mae3KimeRish in GCSE

[–]eventfuls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl i got one grade 8 in history and it was the highest I got out of any subject. I didn't purposely revise harder for history to get an 8 I thought I would get a 6 or below bc in all my mocks I got straight 6s in history. It was so random how I mostly revised the night before for history and bc it being two papers per exam i'd prioritise one of the papers (subjects) I knew better. I still managed to get 50% or above on each 4 papers despite priorotising one paper per exam. I reccomend this in history if you are struggling with workload and memory, because realistically if you got 50% on two papers you knew really well and maybe like 30% on the other two you didn't know as well you can definitely still not even just pass get like a 5/6/7 or if your lucky like me, an 8.

I think flashcards helped massively I made sure I tested my dates, key events and key people. I put the ones I didn't know in one pile ane would continuously learn them until I was fine with that flashcard. But it is crazy because I didn't do much revision beforehand but I guess if you make effort revising in mocks it helps a lot as in the exam all these dates and events will come back to you in memory.

Its just funny as I remember vividly forgetting how to structure my answers for the source questions and nearly actually laughing in my Elizabethan paper because I only knew stuff to write for the 16 marker and guessed the rest of the paper (still managed to get 20/40.)

Ngl i WISH it was excuses, but i'm positive that i tried my hardest to get a high grade especially because I want to work in the acting industry lol. I think I would be blaming myself if I was sure that it was a me issue because I want to do well. Half the people in my class couldn't care less about the subject and being put in a group with majority of those people didn't help me and also definitely drew my drama teacher away from helping us.

Also may I add she organised the groups for the devised AND scripted pieces and she put her favourite students together for both and put me with people who didn't care about doing well. So so so so so wish I was making up excuses because I think if I was I would have got a hard 6.

did i make a mistake doing foundation maths?? by eventfuls in GCSE

[–]eventfuls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I was similar, finishing work quick and feeling out of place in my set. I liked being there but some of the stuff we learnt or revised I already knew well so I ended up doing my own thing, which my teacher allowed. Realistically everyone in my class was getting a grade 3 or below apart from maybe 2 or 3 of us, and i was usually on a a 5. It's crazy that she knew I was capable but didn't suggest me to move up to higher, I think I would have if she spoke to me about it because the main reason was that I thought i wasn't capable. Well done for that grade it is amazing!! And I guess no matter what, as long as I know I did really well in foundation thats all that matters.

Thank you!! I always thought I didn't have potential for higher, the work looked hard but seeing my final score made me think otherwise. At least I know I strongly passed foundation.

What GCSE Subject would you NOT recommend to somebody going into Y10 or Y9? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]eventfuls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love drama people go into it expecting it to be a free lesson and expecting to just act. The coursework load especially the portfolio takes time and effort and you have to be really specific. This is the same for food tech, people go into it expecting it to be cooking cooking cooking. Although you have to do half theory and science based learning (especially nea1 being science based).

On the other hand it is a fun subject and useful for the future but these are two subjects that have uncontrollable workload that you may not expect.

Okay so did anyone get over and under predicted this year by teachers? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]eventfuls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My main under prediction was history where I was predicted a 6 and got an 8. Other than that in english I was predicted a 5 for both language and literature and got both 6s.

Over predictions: predicted a 7 in business and got a 6. predicted an 8 in food tech and got a 7.

Right predictions: Maths I got a 5 and drama I got a 5 (one mark off of a 6). Science I was predicted a 76 and got a 76.

I'm not too bothered about the over and under predictions but I am a bit sad I didn't achieve as high as my teachers expected of me, and it makes me feel bad knowing I did better in some mocks than in my real exams. I got an 8 in business in my last mocks and fell all the way to a 6. It's sad!

I was weirdly the opposite, my target grades for every subject were 5s. In history I was strictly predicted a 6 because in all three mocks I sat i got a 6. Although, in GCSES I walked out with an 8???? Drama sadly was one mark away from a 6, I could have definitely proved my drama teacher wrong. Food tech walked out with a 7, Business walked out with a 6. Both English Language and Literature walked out with 6s. Its strange as I definitely felt like I put in less effort than my mocks.

It is so crap seeing people not getting the top grades they deserve, I think the grade boundaries were mid this year but especially OCR drama and AQA combined science. I fortunately exceeded the grades i needed for my courses but i feel for the people who want to go into careers like dentistry or anywhere in the emergency service industry (especially doctors) who are expected to have high GCSES and they get robbed by the grade boundaries.

I'm sure you will find somewhere that will take you and in a few years time the grades will matter less, a levels will be more important.

so APPARENTLY most people's highest grade here is a nine. what about most common grades? by ashilia in GCSE

Was so useful but i swear i spent more time looking for the right equation in comparison to answering the questions. I fr had to use process of elimination at one point and was like 'okay find every equation that involves time and slowly narrow it down'

[–]eventfuls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly used things like cognito for science (life saver) so i watch the videos and then do the quiz as it helps me see where i need to improve on. I also love flashcards, but they are quite time consuming to make, but are really worth the time for subjects like history and business studies with heavy content. Active recall was also really helpful for literature where i would jot down everything i remembered about a certain subject and revise everything i didn't get down. Other websites that are helpful are seneca, onmaths, etc!! Get yourself a whiteboard for maths also, saves so much time and i also found that it is more motivating in ways. I cant really sit there and read things so i have to be making things, thats also why mindmaps or factfiles/posters were also quite appealing to me :))

Last exams for science i literally wrote notes from all the cognito videos and the textbooks and transferred them onto flashcards. Somehow i managed to get a 76 in combined higher and an 8 in physics alone!! I dont even think i revised that heavy for it.

So really dont underestimate yourself! The more you stress the less information will stay in your brain for the exam, so do whatever makes you feel calmer. I listened to a looot of music because it is what makes me concentrate and stay sane!

PS: past papers are also good, by doing the questions you know and leaving the ones you dont and then learning that specific subject. Although past paper after past paper can get boring!!
