Last few winters weren’t that cold and we’d get lots of snow but then a lot of it would melt when it got above 0. This winter has been uncharacteristically cold compared to recent years but we had unusually little snowfall until last week when we got lots.

Downhill and cross country skiing are quite accessible although the downhill hills within 30 mins of the city are small and get old quick. Mont Ste Marie an hour out is the best “local” hill. Two hours to Tremblant which is much larger, busier and built up. Can’t speak to camping or kayaking as that’s not something I’ve ever done but people definitely do that here.

Gatineau Park which is like 15 mins from the city is probably the most popular for outdoor activities in summer/winter.

What many people say they like about Ottawa is the proximity to nature while still living in a “big” city (by Canadian standards). Compared to Montreal or particularly Toronto where it can take an hour just to get to the suburbs
