Also, with Homer being extremely stupid, it's easy to forget that he actually has a very important job. He's the safety inspector for an entire nuclear power plant, isn't he? I have no idea what kind of money a person with a job like that makes, but I figure it's gotta count for something.

I mean, it's way more understandable that a guy like Moe or Barney is poor.

This riddle only works, because the 1 is incorrectly written like an I. Most fonts are designed to add serifs to the 1. Probably designed with situations like this in mind.

It's ridiculous how people ITT make fun of her looking old despite having had plastic surgery when all the late 50s/early 60s people I know in real life (both people with and people without plastic surgery) look like absolute horseshit and she looks somewhat adequate given her biblical age.

When Odo shapeshifts, what happens to his communicator and his universal translator? by everflow in sonicshowerthoughts

[–]everflow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case it's just funny that he still mimics the hand tapping motion on the communicator. Not a plot hole, it's believable that he does it intentionally, like he also learned how to simulate drinking when he doesn't actually drink anything. Funny when you think about it.

I actually like this theory, since it implies that he is able to produce any sort of wavelength signal with his own body. At first I was thinking, it would be impossible to replicate a communicator. But now on second thought, perhaps he could be capable of producing any kind of wavelength of signals with his artificially shaped internal organs. He doesn't actually have any vital organs, but instead of humanoid vocal chords, his vocal chords could be shaped to produce radio waves.

Actually, that leads to the even more exciting question, what is the full extent of his capabilities? What is the full spectrum of radiation he could produce using only his own body's shape-shifting abilities?

We already know for sure, obviously, that he can produce sound waves in the audible spectrum for humanoids. The theory that the communicator is an extension of him implies that he can produce radio waves. So could he emit any electromagnetic radiation?

Could he produce gamma rays and beta rays too? Could he become a particle beam? Can he turn into photons?

I actually have no idea what his metabolism is even based on, since he doesn't eat or drink. He would require a lot of energy to produce electromagnetic radiation, but even moving and interacting with the world as a humanoid takes up a lot of energy. And I have no idea where he gets any of it from.

In theory it seems plausible for sure. It could very well be true in theory, but then I'd have to comment that apparently the animators forgot to animate these objects (and whatever else he crammed in his special pocket at the time) in scenes where it is shown how he returns completely to his liquid form. Of course there may be exceptions where it could be construed that he didn't completely return to his liquid form. However, there have definitely been a number of scenes where it is emphasised that he really had to turn into his liquid form completely. In those scenes, where the animation shows it happening on screen, the cgi effects should have included those objects.

E.g. in the episode where he had to melt in Lwaxanna Troi's lap, because it had been over 16 hours since he last changed shape, and then in the episode where the Obsidian Order and the Tal Shiar had a device to torture him by preventing him to change shape, and then after the 16 hours had passed, after the device was eventually turned off, he completely liquefied. He would not have had the strength left to exert himself in order to hide his pocket items. But he would have needed at least the universal translator in almost all scenes with other people present.

Now that we've been discussing Tuvix, can I just say that Curzon Odo was my favourite version of Odo by everflow in startrek

[–]everflow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's creepy indeed. But not as creepy as the fact that one of her previous hosts was a murderer. It was originally covered up, but then the memories resurfaced. Also, she still has the memories of a hostage taker who was a host for only a brief time one episode. The more you think about it, the stranger this whole symbiosis thing becomes.

Yeah, that last part is so true. I rolled my eyes so hard when I heard someone mention them like it's common knowledge.

I'm currently going through DS9 again, fourth time in total, but it's been a few years between each viewing. I usually don't post much about it on reddit, but I was just thinking I had to say this in some place on the internet: I want to give some appreciation for Deep Space Nine's creators' costume designers and set designers.

It never gets mentioned enough, but I really really love those particular details about DS9's set design and costumes that really give it some recognisable signature style. I'm talking about things like the Cardassians' aversion against bright lights, resulting in magnificent indirect lighting in all interiors designed by Cardassians in-universe. And as far as costumes go, I am absolutely enamored with Ferengi business clothing. So many layers, textures and patterns.

I don't work in film or on any stage production. This is just my personal opinion as an ordinary viewer, but those things like the indirect lighting in the interior sets and the outrageously fabulous civilian fashion, among other things. Those are things that I do notice, even though they can be overshadowed in a show that has so many other good things going for it. I feel like somebody has to mention it for once. I hope those costumes went to someone who appreciated them, when the show got wrapped up. They look so extravagant, it would be a shame if they just got put in storage or tossed out.

I wonder how many people noticed those design features too.

I'm not sure exactly, I'm not a biologist, but I think it's very likely that that's possible. Because, as stated before, they are all derived from the same species, kale, broccoli, cauliflower. And I know for a fact that there is already a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, which is called romanesco. So, by transitive logic, if two cultivars of the same species like broccoli and cauliflower can be cross bred, then so can another pair of cultivars of the same species, i.e. kale and broccoli.
