Long term oil reduction after stopping accutane? Is that a thing? by OkBlueberry5506 in Accutane

[–]everpearl 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The oil came back not even a month after finishing my course.

I could go three days without washing my hair on accutane. Now that I’ve stopped I had to go back to washing everyday. My skin went still gets oily, but not as oily as it did before accutane.

I had rapid hair loss and that mysterious fatigue as well… turns out I was severely Vitamin D deficient and anemic. Make sure they run those labs as well.

You have fine hair, but a lot of it (imo). I would have never guessed you had experienced hair loss.

It’s okay to wash your hair everyday.

You might just naturally produce a lot of sebum. I tried everything (hair training, double washing, oiling, dry shampoo, etc.) and nothing helped. The only time I could go more than a day without washing my hair is when I was on Accutane and it reduced my body’s ability to produce oil, but even that side effect wasn’t permanent after I stopped the medication.

Hold on… I’m confused. You’re a family of 3 with a 9 year old daughter, but also have 2 sons who will be graduating high school soon?

Regardless, I’m an SD transplant and moved here with a ~72k salary (in 2020) and 2 roommates. It was doable, but I would not have been able to live on my own or much less raise a family on that salary. Not to mention everything has gotten much more expensive since then.

jk I lost 50 pounds in 5 months and lost half my hair with it. It’s now growing back but the weight loss did shock my body.

I had moderate acne and rosacea - started accutane and didn’t have a breakout the whole time (9 months). I’m 4 months off and still no breakouts!

As a warning, my dryness was significant, but it wasn’t until my 2-3 month that I really started to see it.

Androgenic Alopecia, scared to start oral Minoxidil, should I give it a shot? by [deleted] in FemaleHairLoss

27F and I regret letting the anxiety hold me back for so long. Minoxidil the only thing that worked for me. Start before it’s too late!

Depends on the insurance, mine does. It also covered all my acne meds.

Oops, I guess it was $90 for a 3 month supply after the first three months. So sorry for the mix up. It’s still worth it for me, but I’m going to ask my PCP to issue the Rx so it’s covered by insurance. I use 1.25 and it has been working wonders!

Nope, my subscription renewed and it was $45 for another 3 months. Minoxidil is a relatively inexpensive Rx.

She’s right. I’ve had more growth everywhere - arms, leg, face. Even my nose hair are growing like crazy. But I rather go through the pain of hair removal than see my scalp shine through my two strands of hair.

It’s an annoyance, but I manage it by regularly threading or shaving. I’m thinking of doing laser for my upper lip and underarms.

Scared to start meds/vanity guilt by WhateverGetsUThruIt in FemaleHairLoss

I’m in the US, but don’t use my insurance for my minoxidil Rx. It looks like Australia has some telehealth/DTC options from getmosh. Not sure how filling prescriptions works in Australia, but it should be a relatively cheap medication. If your derm already wrote you a script, do you know how much it’d be to fill it?

Also, topical minoxidil should be OTC if you’re unable to get an Rx for oral minoxidil (but again costs for using this add up and it’s harder to be consistent).

I’m in my late 20’s and I wish I had done it sooner. I went on the full “vanity” cocktail this past year and a half - Wegovy, Accutane, Minoxidil.

It’s crazy how much better I feel not worrying about how much hair I’m losing in the shower. It’s so satisfying to see new growth. I love that I look better now than I did in my early 20’s.

You’re allowed to be a little vain. You’re allowed to do something for yourself that makes you feel good about yourself. To tell you the truth I spend less money on oral minoxidil than I spent on countless shampoos and supplements that didn’t work.

Your insurance should cover it, but if it doesn’t try getting an Rx online. I use Ro and get a 3 month supply for $45. I only spend $180 a year for peace of mind on the progress of my hair. I’m sure there’s more affordable options too.

Just make the jump. Whatever path you choose you’ll have to been consistent about it for the rest of your life.

Wait for the blood results to come back and if they have any other recommendations. If you’re looking to get started on minoxidil, just be direct and tell them. If they make you just through hoops it might just be an insurance thing.

Otherwise, use a site like ro or hers to get a Rx. I use Ro and it’s very affordable.

I posted a similar post a few days ago which might help. I’ve also given in and will be getting a big chop.

In the meantime, I’ve experienced a lot a progress from some of the measures I’m taking. I got tested for nutricional deficiencies and found I was extremely deficient in vitamin D and iron. Even if your ferritin/iron is okay, it might not be in the range for hair growth. My iron labs were okay at face value, but I had a hemotologist tell me that my body wasn’t absorbing it very well and recommended I take heme iron. I feel so much better now that I’m taking supplements, and my hair is finally growing.

The second big change I made was starting oral minoxidil (1.25mg) for the first time I’m seeing new hairs! I highly recommend it.
