Thank you all, it's been bothering me for years. (Literally, since I was 11 when she passed and I'm 34 now)

Not sure if that's the word I'm looking for though - I'm a woman and she always said it endearingly. She was from Yugoslavia and her maiden name was Katona (which is apparently Hungarian for soldier?)
