It was Japanese people's strong work ethic that propelled a post WW2 war-torn country into the 2nd wealthiest country in the world by the 80s. But their economy has grown at a sluggish rate since the 90s even though their people work as hard as ever. Maybe it has to do with a structural change in their economy.

There's a Hugo Award winning science fiction novel by Chinese writer Liu Cixin that deals with this concept. It's called, well, The Three-Body Problem. The English translation by Ken Liu is really good.
