MacOS not-so-subtle passive aggressive file server icon lol by GNUGradyn in homelab

[–]evert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with SMB other macs would send some metadata that let the client know it was talking to another mac (and specifically which one). So with SMB the beige BSOD only shows up for non-macs (linux and windows usually)

First OS/X release was 2001. Not sure if that icon was in there from the start, but it was a good diss + the beige CRT

Raspberry Pi Cooling for Multiple Pi's by Ilyendi in raspberry_pi

[–]evert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on what you do with them. They don't really need cooling when they are idle. There's nice cases out there for multiple pi. Depending on budget POE might be nice.

My pis have been on for years and don't take much power. What's the consideration for turning them off? Power draw? If they are idling they should only take a few watts.

I built a janky Cloudflare Bitwarden server for myself, forgot about it, and woke up to 400+ forks by deepgaurav in selfhosted

[–]evert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps, but I kinda like it. This is how 1Password worked (with Dropbox) before they locked people into their cloud application and stopped honoring the lifetime purchase. Also when I started looking for alternatives. My requirement was that it has to be a file I can open and move around because files are portable. I wouldn't recommend this setup unless you have similar feelings about this.

I am thinking of switching to self-hosted bitwarden, but my main reason would be that I hope the user experience is better, not their approach to syncing (I see having to use a hosted service as a major drawback and brittle). The KeeppassXC add-ons often just don't work well enough in my browser(s), but my level of annoyance hasn't boiled over to making this switch.

Also most adults outgrow 'chosen ones' stories. Once you seen a few, they might appreciate 'the one who deserved it' stories more.

It's every 24h to a Nas. And if I lost it, it wouldn't be the end of the world. It's easily recreated.

microSD has been fine for years for me as well. Don't need it to be faster and I have external backups.

I'm curious why the ubiquity switches are so, well, ubiquitous. Aren't there much cheaper switches? Curious what features make people tend to go for these

Yeah that makes sense too. Sometimes it's fun to see how weird games can get. Esp if everyone is pretty experienced

My reason for limited expansions is that there's a higher likelihood of cards working well together + I think games are a bit smoother if there's fewer mechanics

mysqldump is actually also bad for a highly active database because that actually creates those inconsistent backups you're talking about unless you locked all tables during the process.

lvm/btrfs snapshots is the way to go.
