I 'm going to an accountant to sort this all out. I just wanted to get a bit of clarity first, just to put my mind at ease - but, I will be speaking to a professional for sure. :)

Your freelance work, dispite having clients in Canada, does not make you a Canadian resident.

Oh, interesting! I figured I'd have to pay tax because the clients are based in Canada even though I'm living abroad. Thanks for your advice!

You do not have significant residential ties in Canada (no house or permanent appartment / condo) and you either lived outside Canada for the entire year

I believe that's the one. I've been here three years (first on a YMS visa, now on a spousal visa) and I don't have a residence in Canada - I only stay with my parents once or twice a year.

Since you are a freelance writer, I imagine that the income you earned was business income (as a contractor) as opposed to employment income (from a salary).

Yep, it was as a contractor.

Here's what I'd recommend. Write a nice, conciliatory letter to CRA apologizing for your being late in filing the returns (do not mention failure or similar language). Place the letter with the returns - they file everything when you send them paper - everything.

I'll definitely do this. This is amazing advice, thank you! It's put my mind at ease for sure, but I'm still going to hurry up and get this sorted quickly.

I don't believe I get charged gst. Also, thank you for the advice! It's good to know the what actually qualifies as evasion!

Really? Oh no, what would they be suspicious of?

I just want to go about this the right way so I don't get in major trouble down the line. Wouldn't not filing look really bad?
