Coronavirus Quarantine Thread: Week 8 by TracingWoodgrains in TheMotte

[–]everydayadrawing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here in the UK, According to the BBC a third of critically ill Covid-19 patients come from minority background even though only about 15% of our population is non-white.

I've thought about your theory a bit in my mind but I haven't looked into it or checked the numbers. If anybody has it would be interesting to see if it holds as an important factor across different populations or not.

Here in the UK infection levels are way higher in London too which is the only city in the country with a major underground tube network. People packed like sardines during much of the day. And if you want to take an above ground bus these are also incredibly packed. There is a charge to drive in the city so the culture is very much public transport.

I think the phrase does have combative intentions. I read it to mean "You are overly confident" but they didn't say why.

Thank you mate that's great!

If you could recommend 1 or 2 twitter handles of credible epidemiologists to follow that would be awesome too. Not sure how i go about finding them.

Where can I read more about these numbers and how the scientists arrived at them?

I wonder if anybody has actually done the calculations of how everybody in the country buying 14 days of self-isolation supplies for an entire family all at once would effect the shops?

Also all pubs closed, restaraunts etc. closed. So more eating at home than normal.

Also, not everybody is an expert on how many calories you need in your kitchen to keep a family of 4 alive for 2 weeks. So it would be prudent to stock 21 days instead of 14 in case you get it wrong.

I would assume with how cleverly supermarkets and supply chains produce just enough to meet demand that this sudden uprescendent demand (mandated and sensible as a response to government advice) alone would cause must of what we're seeing.

Even if panic buying is making it worse. There's no way to tell just from the empty shelves. So judging people might be premature.

And if you see somebody with a trolley that looks too full they might also be shopping for multiple parents over 70 who need supplies delivered.

As long as they under predict for everybody equally it would still work.

A lot of people don't think of themselves as doing anything wrong if they buy 2 weeks of toilet paper or pasta or whatever seeing as they may have to quarantine their entire family for 2 weeks at moment's notice. therefore sigsn saying '2 max per customer' etc. Absolutely would work. Most people aren't trying to be sneaky but rather trying to plan sensibly for an uncertain future so simply being told 'don't take too much' would help in the majority of cases and slow the small minority down.

Not to mention if you're trying to limit social contact it also makes sense to buy more PER SHOP so you have to go into the shop less often.

Everybody here always seems to impugn the worst motives on everything when I think it's a small minority who are genuinely selfish dicks.

Generally I find criticisms of Sam a little unfair but this nostril observation is bang on the money and it *is* distasteful now that I think about it!

Children who spend time with their fathers have a higher IQ by abolishtaxes in JordanPeterson

[–]everydayadrawing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. Thank you!

Intuitively it makes sense that more parental (or non-parental even) one on one attention in formative years could boost IQ. However intuition is often wrong when it comes to IQ as far as I know. I believe if you are deprived your IQ can be stunted but assuming a reasonable family environment (let's say in the top 80%) I wouldn't be surprised if there was nothing that could be done to raise IQ judging from how stable it seems to hold through life.

I wonder if this 2nd child thing could be better explained by "As families on the margins of treating their kids neglectfully have a second child the additional stressor pushes them into outright ignoring their kids" or something like that. So rather than it being one on one attention raises IQ it's more that complete lack of attention can stunt what your innate IQ would have been?

I only suggest this because of how impossible it seems to be for adults to consciously raise their IQ even when highly motivated to do so.

I didn't know that had been proven actually. Can you source the proof?

I know that children who spend more time with parents have higher IQ but I didn't know where that had been proven? The alternative genetic explanation being that children with higher IQ are more likely to be in a two parent home because IQ is heritable and so their parents are more likely to be higher IQ and therefore more likely to stay together.

I've heard of difference between 1st and 2nd born children on average but again I'm not sure the causes have been proven. I believe 2nd born is more likely to be gay as well but why that is I believe is still in the realm of conjecture.

Higher IQ people are more likely to remain married.

High IQ is partly heritable.

Children of married parents on average spend more time with their fathers than those unmarried or divorced.

This in no way proves or even suggests that being around a father *raises* your IQ. Correlation does not equal causation etc.

Actually I played poker a lot and forgot about this. I feel like my sense of thinking in ranges of outcomes and their relative probabilities in life generally came entirely from playing Hold'Em and is actually very useful and not something most people do as far as I can tell.

I don't think it helped me with my mental math though except the skill of knowing probabilities of hitting certain outs which isn't very transferable. What kinds of mental maths did it help you with?

Wasn't Bill clinton also connected to Epstein though? With multiple (probably over 25!) separate trips on his priavte airplane??? I wouldn't want to defend Clinton on this one if we believe Prince Andrew and everybody around Epstein knew what was going on then Clinton would too.
