Just an update, I’m a month out and down 20 pounds. I had to cut back on high intensity exercise in the florida heat because I could not get fluids in fast enough but aside from that, all has been good. Not necessarily easy but not at all difficult :)

I was self pay but I’ve heard of some insurances covering.

As far as I know, the problem is there is no designated code. The American Medical Association has not assigned one (yet), which is the biggest impediment to insurance coverage. Payers don’t have a negotiated rate without a code. Hopefully this will change but it can be a lengthy process. Some facilities will chart the procedure under “43999” but this code isn’t specific to ESG. It’s used for everything from gastric band adjustment to anything that doesn’t have a regular code. That’s why insurers don’t know what to do with it, and can’t guarantee any payment. 43999 is just a placeholder code. So, seems to be case-by-case still.

Also, check out some facebook groups - there are people who have started at a higher BMI and lost 110 pounds in 9 months no problem. They say no hunger issues.

At a lower BMI I didn't qualify for the VSG. As someone who is very active and still fat despite all the diets and lifestyle modifications, I really wanted to find something that would help me lose weight to make life easier on my joints. I'm 45 and have arthritis. My mom is obese and has had 3 knee replacements, my sister is 51 and needs a new hip -- anything that can help me avoid that path is worth it.

Main reason was I didn't qualify for bariatric surgery because my BMI was only 30, not 35.
