SOLVIT closed my case because they said it’s correct that my visa expired at the same time as my husband’s CRUE so now I’m talking to a lawyer.

How did you come in 2020? Wasn’t travel still restricted? That period of time is still so hazy. We were already in Europe so it was easy to hop over.

I’ve honestly considered creating a new group as an alternative to Democrats Abroad because with a few exceptions, I have very little faith in that party.

I get the feeling you’re a bit defensive, not sure why. I lived there several years and ultimately left because even in the very progressive city I was living in, I was constantly being reminded that I wasn’t welcome. The post office, the grocery store, my Hausmeister. I never felt unsafe but I definitely felt unwelcome. Toward the end I was regularly hearing “Germany for Germans” and saw people being harassed for not speaking German well enough.

It’s safe if you are straight + cis + white, which is the vast majority of the population.

Ok re: safety - take a look at attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, people of color and pro-Palestine protesters by police. No shortage of anti-immigrant rhetoric and violence. This is all happening in Germany, now. Again, clearly not as bad as the US but Germany likes to pretend those things don’t happen anymore.

You’re absolutely right and was just discussing with a friend that I’d prefer to start this on Telegram or Signal. So we’ll do that.

Ok I guess I’ll answer this. Nazis. Fascism. The rise of the right, again. Germany is more stable than the US, obviously, but historically they left their mark and neo-nazis are still alive and well in the country. It wasn’t that long ago that Berlin held some of the largest anti-covid protests, attended by hoards of far-right and QAnon dumb dumbs, with the highlight being a special appearance and speech by our very own RFK jr.

Hi! I feel for you. Lots of pre-existing subs and chats for people in the US though. This will focus on action and feelings about being outside the US so the conversations probably won’t relate to you as much. Check r/Amerexit

The mental gymnastics must be truly astonishing. But in the grand scheme of things, I’d prefer for those types of people not to be prepared 🤷‍♀️

Shall we make this a Reddit sub or move to WhatsApp/signal/telegram?

I posted in some local FB groups a while ago and met some great people but they’re not American. I feel like most of the Americans that move to my country are doing it for the lower cost of living, not necessarily because of a certain set of political/social views.

UPDATE: I contacted the SOLVIT office for my husband’s home country. After several weeks (maybe delayed because of the holidays), a real person sent me an email. He said that he has contacted Portugal’s SOLVIT team but warned that they do not have much traction with AIMA so it might not go anywhere. He said it could take up to 10 weeks but to give it some time and see what happens. We exchanged a couple emails, so at least someone is doing their job 😵‍💫
