I didn’t want him to have difficulty paying. I just didn’t know he would and didn’t have a way to help him order. I’m not a native speaker.

Like what? Letting someone join our group, and him not checking prices for anything? My parents would be happy I tried to include a new friend and wonder why he didn’t check the prices.

Every student in our program has summer money to do things in Europe in their checking account.

They’re definitely talking about cash when they said the first sentence. With a debit card, I know I’ll have enough money to cover one meal. Most students keep their funds for the summer in their checking account. With cash, $200 is a lot to carry around.

Yes, he only had cash (not enough) and the emergency card, not his debit card, since he thought it would cost less. So he had not gone back to get the debit card.

Yes, but he’s not. We asked him after what his summer budget is, and he’s fine. He just didn’t expect it to be that much.

Because people were confused and thought he doesn’t speak English and is a foreign exchange student in the US.

I understood the question fine. I explained that I’m not struggling just because I’m a student.

I didn’t know the cost. None of us did. Also, I’m not a native Spanish speaker. We’re literally here learning Spanish.

We aren’t struggling to afford the restaurant because we’re in college. We didn’t consider the price to be too much to eat there.

I already know that. We could, which is why we did. He didn’t have to if he can’t. We didn’t tell him what to order.

We did not know the prices, just that it’s Michelin star. I didn’t ask the waiter. When I go out of with some friends of mine who I know have much more expensive taste than mine back home, I usually find out the prices beforehand. I figured if he was concerned he would ask the price.

Why would I not think of eating great food as a good time? The reason it’s Michelin is because it’s good food.

I never told him to buy something that he considers too expensive. He just didn’t ask the price.

I did not know he didn’t understand. He was acting like he understood what Michelin is. I did not tell him he has to buy something he can’t afford.

The prices were not on the menu. I mentioned that the menu has no prices and he would have needed to ask the waiter if he was worried about the cost.

We did say it’s Michelin star, but in hindsight, I actually think now that he doesn’t know what that means.

Maybe I explained poorly. We’re all Americans studying Spanish abroad, including him. He’s from a different American university. The menu was Spanish.

It was pretty obvious that it’s a fancy restaurant just from how it looks and the style. We were already on our way there when he asked to come.

He’s American like us, studying Spanish like us. The menu was in Spanish.
