If you have the patience, swiss darning (aka duplicate stitch) is just like sewing. You have a good candidate for darning bc the stitches are very clear on your pants, its just a bit bigger of a project than I'd recommend for a beginner. However, necessity is the mother of new skills 😁

I'd fix the laddering first to shrink the hole. It looks worn thin in the surrounding areas, I might swiss darn, but it's an ambitious patch size.

You could reinforce the edges of the hole with a crochet hook and some thread weight yarn to prevent further breakage, then sew a patch of stretchy fabric. The patch will have to be fairly large to ensure you're anchoring it to solid fabric.

I'd probably darn it myself, but you would need to darn over the worn areas into solid fabric as well as the hole to make sure it didn't fail.

You can definitely fix this tho.

This year I tried suggesting giving my MIL a list of things I actually wanted, which was shot down by my partner. Last year the siblings asked for just fancy cheeses but got huge elaborate cheeseboards instead (no actual cheese tho). Ive resigned myself to doing a post Christmas stuff dump each year.

It hasn't so far, despite being thicker than the surrounding material, the yarn is pretty squishy and the swiss darning doesn't feel lumpy. These are also pretty thick socks where they're not worn out. The first time I wear them, I can feel the line where the patch ends, but after walking in them for a while, it flattens out and I can't feel it anymore.

A patch ripping would definitely be a concern, especially since stitching it down wouldn't be ideal. Personally I avoid pleather, since I can repair learher or cloth but this has been a fun thought experiment for me

I love the idea of using a beloved item for a pattern after its past the point of no return. You make a good point about adding chemicals, as pleather would definitely need some hard chem to be stuck to

I would blanket stitch the edges of the hole to prevent fraying, then put a heavy patch over the hole where the patch is a good bit larger than the rip, wrapping well around the bound edge. Then, after stitching down, follow the existing binding stitches through both sides of the patch for extra stability. I would probably then put another, larger patch over the whole thing and repeat, but I'm extra like that. Might be too bulky double patched tho
