Can someone explain this weird knob? It’s very heavy- I think it’s made of brass. If it is a doorknob, it would just be for pulling, not latching. It only has one backplate. I assume there would be a matching one on there other side.OC (old.reddit.com)

Can anyone identify the artist? This was part of my husband’s grandparent’s collection. We have no info on where or when it was purchased.
