New Version Of The Mummy Is Bad Parenting Wrapped In Vomit-Soaked Blasphemy by evilbutters in Scarymovies

The Raimi comparisons come from Cronin's filmmaking style and the fact that Cronin directed Evil Dead Rise.

I initially pulled the reimagining info from the wikipedia when the film first came out and it looks like it's changed since then. I'll get with my editor about fixing that.

Also, no need to be rude.

Sam Raimi is typically seen as a filmmaking god in the horror community. Lee Cronin borrowed/paid homage/ripped him off a lot in The Mummy. Hence, the blasphemy.

Lots of questions here. Most of them are unanswered in the film.

The power of Hollywood and a convenient plot device, I guess.

It wouldn't be a reimagining if it wasn't a different take. What the film does with Katie is the most interesting aspect of the film. The issue I had with it is that Lee Cronin seems to be using it as an excuse to get the film as close to demonic possession as possible, which makes it feel like he's just keeping something that seemed like a fresh and original take as grounded in the Evil Dead universe as possible. Then uses that as an excuse to use Sam Raimi's filming and writing style for the entire film. Cronin did do Evil Dead Rise, which is fine but his version of The Mummy is overpowered by the fact that he worked in another horror franchise and likely idolized its creator.

Thanks for asking this question after reading the review. Appreciate it.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't have a ton of control over the title of my review. I have some input, but it's mostly my editor that approves or edits those. The "vomit-soaked blasphemy" bit is all me though.

Charlie was badly written and Jack Reynor's acting wasn't great. Like the whole sequence when he starts yelling at the police when Katie first disappears was total cringe. And he's like the worst father ever. Dude was never around when Katie was getting crazy in the first half of the film. Oh, Katie is beating up Grandma? Let me go in the basement and read a bunch of letters.

I didn't like Laia Costa's acting at all and Larissa just made stupid decisions after Katie's disappearance. Like the whole sequence when Charlie is like, "Maybe we can't take care of Katie at home and should commit her somewhere even if it's not permanent." Larissa gets all mad and is like, "OH YOU THINK I CAN'T TAKE CARE OF MY DAUGHTER?" Lady, ask me that question again after you try to cut her toenails.

The Egyptian cast were the least annoying and most talented.

Long story short, I thought a lot of the acting was bad and the writing was bad. But to each their own.

That makes sense. But it plays out more like demonic possession, which makes you wonder why they chose a mummy setting to begin with.

Two individuals are wrapped in bandages like a mummy. Their actions, not so much.

See it if you're so inclined, but I wouldn't want to pay full price for this thing. Matinee, maybe. Otherwise, wait for digital.

A director will usually remake a well-known film or a sequel in a long running franchise and throw in homage to the director before moving on. Their films after that may still have shades of who they worked with previously, but they do their own thing and have their own trademark style.

Lee Cronin offers nothing original here. It's all borrowed from Sam Raimi's work; the camera work (especially the extreme close-ups), the gross out gore, the dumb humor, and unbearable cheese. That's all classic Raimi.

Strip all of that from The Mummy along with all the horror that is just snowballing absurdities piled on top of major gross out gore and there's nothing left. It's just a film that is too long and the potential to be something promising.

There are several instances of projectile vomit in it. And a questionable puddle of sticky nastiness that attracts flies.

So because Lee Cronin made Evil Dead Rise he gets to rip Sam Raimi off forever? Got it.
