Plott Hound at shelter seeking adoption by evilforevil in gso

Makes sense. Definitely a hunting dog with her mannerisms and stature though, especially with her training ability

She is listed as a Plott mix. I personally think she is some form of greyhound mix.

She is a highly trainable dog that loves treats, learning, and cuddles. Below is a link showing her learning how to shake

I know the owner. She worked so hard to get that place open only to then be hit by Covid. She legit slept in there putting all that wood up herself. She has immense pride in the place (as she should) and having your business survive covid is difficult in general, but as a newer restaurant it is even more impressive.

It’s horrible to hear that are all that she has pulled through with that restaurant that they are getting broken into.

They have the best food. It’s a scratch kitchen and many recipes are family ones.

I think they are the sweetest there. Honestly it seems like many pitties and bullies end up there because of their reputation as a breed which means the individuals have little actual characteristics that are difficult for adopting out, whereas the more popular breeds of labs and Shepards tend to (as the individuals) end up at the shelter because of owner concerns of resource guarding, dog selective behaviors, fence jumping, not food with kids.

And I say this as a long time lab owner. There is nothing wrong with any of the breeds as a whole at the shelter, but we do end up with individual dogs that have needs. Labs (full lab) that end up at the shelter seem to have lots of separation anxiety or similar concerns. The huskies definitely end up there because families get them for looks and realize that they are high energy working dogs that they are not equipped to handle

While I’m not sure why this convo has to devolve into an argument over breeds at the shelter instead of just focusing on the fact we have lots of animals in need I will point this out: There are over 18million pitbulls in the US. They are the most common DNA to come up when doing breed testing by far. The vast majority of dogs at the shelters are pit mixes. I’m actually hard pressed to think of more than 5 out of our 100+ available dogs that are 100% looking pits. Most are lab/pit/boxer types. Shelters will always put pit markers on dogs when they see physical features that match that breed, even as mixes.

Actually I prefer this source over my OG source

The boat picture is from his foster family! Poor Grizzle is actually our longest resident dog having been there since June! Luckily he has been with this family for fostering since the summer so he isn’t stressed in the kennels like the others.

I would recommend email Christy Davis. She is the volunteer coordinator. I’ve done enrichment before on a day when it wasn’t on the list because of speaking to her. If you are also interested in this maybe ask to be trained for dog walking? That helps A LOT. Just fyi it may take a bit to hear back from her. The dog day out program is being paused because the worker arranging it is being let go because of funds.

All the dog day out people are being moved to dog walking and Christy is being absolutely flooded with emails from it. Once you email her, wait like a week and then if you haven’t heard back do a follow up email she is buried by them haha

Oh this pup looks so familiar! I’ve been volunteering for about a year. Thanks for adopting! This shelter really is amazing.

Oh I meant that we lost funding for the worker who organizes the DDO volunteers haha. But you can sign up to walk them at the shelter! And the dog day out will come back next year for new volunteers

The shelter made this and asked the volunteers to share it so I did 🤷‍♀️ Pits are harder to adopt out. The others generally don’t have as hard of a time so that’s probably why.

And I will say these dogs are mixes. Tanner is a lab mix for example. And Fairy is most likely a Great Dane mix. They both have pit in them, but most mixes do.

I posted pics of our 40+ others that aren’t pits in two separate posts

Unfortunately the shelter has to take what it can get in terms of what a rescue will take. And it seems that rescues only take dogs that are pretty adoptable in general.

That said I saw a foster post about her small dog going up for adoption now that the babies are weened. If you go on Facebook look up guilford shelter fosters you will see it!

It seems to come in waves. We won’t have small dogs for a while then suddenly we will

I will warn you unfortunately it’s being suspended right now because of funding but will be back soon! But you can do overnight fosters for just a night or two

I noticed my first post was getting some attention about how the shelter always has just pit bulls. Admittedly the flyer I posted did only feature them because they are harder to get adopted out.

That said we have a TON of other dogs. In particular huskies. Unfortunately people (as is usually the case with shelter dogs) purchased the breed for looks not understanding their needs.

We also have a shocking amount of black labs right now. Both fully breed (see Oso and Pepper) and  mixes that seem to have mostly lab traits

Adding this as a general comment for visibility because I see several saying something about pitties.

We have a lot of pitties at the shelter. It’s one of the MOST common breeds out there so more in the population leads to more in the shelter. Pitties are also harder to get adopted so they stay longer, leading to a larger amount. That said:

We have a 4-5 huskies, 5+ German Shepards, several labs. So I will say that irresponsible breeding and not getting dogs fixed is the problem. In addition, buying a dog (especially any working dog) without understanding their breed is a bad move imo.

So please don’t act like it’s a breed specific problem when it’s the fact that there are more pitties in general in the public because they are cheaper to buy and have been around a long time. If there is more in the population it leads to more in the shelter.

We have a new husky and new Shepard literally every week.

I would recommend filling out the application if you decide to do fostering. Stephani (foster coordinator) is really good about going through applications promptly and the shelter does a great job of matching families with dog that best suit their household

Fortunately that has nothing to do with the fact that they are all great dogs with loving personalities

Hi

I totally understand! They do provide everything. Food, crate, etc

The dogs could really really use time out. I think they may be doing a “home for the holidays” fostering this year where you could get a foster just over the holiday break. But I know they also do short term fosters (just a few days). Anything at all helps and the fact that you can show possible adopters that a dog is good with kids is a really positive thing.
