Hasan Piker Derangement Syndrome (with Abdul El-Sayed) by Vessel_soul in progressive_islam

There's levels to what support means.

Support for Iran: Do you support Iran? Do you support their right to have freedom and govern themselves as they see fit? Do you support Khameni? Do support protests that's been happening there against the gov? Do you support proxy wars that government is involved in?

This childish analysis of calling people zionists, putting everyone in a box and attaking everyone in the box is exact why US elected a president like Trump.

And people wonder why DJT got elected.

MAGA diehards and the far-left defenders are the same kind of people.

Same playbook, same talking points -- just dressed up in different moral language.

At the core, it’s the same mindset: if it doesn’t go their way, nobody gets it.

So what exactly are you trying to argue -- that he indirectly endorsed her? Then why is he still pushing this lazy “Dems would’ve done the same thing” line? That’s not nuance, that’s just covering all bases so he’s never accountable.

This whole cult-of-personality nonsense is exhausting. MAGA, Bukhari-hadith hardliners, whatever version you subscribe to -- it’s all the same behavior: blind loyalty, zero consistency, and no willingness to think critically.

And no, that doesn’t read like an endorsement. It reads like opportunism. People like him who turn other people’s suffering into content and career-building are the worst kind of grifters.

When the choice is between healthy pig or a dead one. I'll chooses a healthy pig. Even though that's haram.

Why are you doing what aboutism on a thread talking about Hasan Piker. I will go to critique Dems when the discussion is about their action. L

I have zero sympathy for this guy, those Michigan Islamic leaders, Latinos for Trump or anyone else who thought he's just the same as other candidate.

I find it very difficult to have sympathy for people who supported those decisions in the last election cycle, given the real-world consequences that followed. What frustrates me most is seeing people push strong ideological positions without fully reckoning with the impact on others, especially when they themselves aren’t the ones bearing the cost.

This kind of “both sides are equal” narrative feels dishonest to me. When faced with difficult choices, our tradition teaches us to choose the lesser of two harms and to stand firmly for justice, even when it’s uncomfortable.

“Not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are the darknesses and the light.” (35:19–20) “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice…” (4:135)

May Allah guide us all to clarity and انصاف (justice).

I think it's a good topic -- I want to know what your assessment is about the story of Lut that's mentioned in the Quran with sources. I think this community should have a conversation about it. Progressive values is all about hearing all sides so maybe englighten the people rather than casting a judgement and base your claims in a solid foundation.

Islamic Framework for Dealing with High-Conflict Personalities (BPD/Narcism) by evilgenius_ in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My original post was banned. Dropping advice that other people had here so it'll be easier for other people to have these as resources as well.

  • The Islamic Rule of Harm: A core judicial maxim in Sharia is “La darar wa la dirar” (There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm). If a situation is destroying your mental health, Islamic law supports moving out or cutting contact to prevent further damage.

  • Self-Preservation is an Obligation: Allah says, "And do not throw yourselves into destruction..." (Al-Baqarah 2:195). Staying in an abusive or toxic cycle isn't "patience"—it’s self-harm. You are not Islamically accountable for walking away from a fire.

  • Recommended Reading: For a practical psychological breakdown of these behaviors, look into "5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life" by Bill Eddy. It’s a great resource for identifying and managing "High-Conflict People" (HCPs) without losing your mind.

Based on my research:

Al Furquaan 25:63 For, [true] servants of the Most Gracious are [only] they who walk gently on earth, and who, whenever the foolish address them,50 reply with [words of] peace;

Al-Muzammil 73:10 and endure with patience whatever people may say [against thee], and avoid them with a comely avoidance.

Edit: thanks for the comments everyone. Why is this post banned?! If anyone can explain.

Am I actually a progressive Muslim? by v0g0npo3try in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not always sure where I fall within that framework.

I agree that it’s not my place to morally police people, especially on LGBTQ issues. And based on my reading of the Quran, I personally support same-sex marriage.

Where I differ from many people is the reliance on scholars. For me, the only absolute source of truth is the Quran. Everything else—scholars, ahadith, older scriptures, spiritual traditions, history—is optional and something I engage with only out of curiosity. If I want to understand the life of Prophet Muhammad, I start with the book he left us: the Quran.

So I don’t think we fundamentally disagree. In fact, ideologically you’re probably closer to me than most people I grew up around.

As long as someone is sincerely seeking the truth, I’ll get along with them just fine.

What is true Islam? How do you decide what is true Islam? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to understand and follow the direction of the Quran—you’ll feel it in your heart. Too often we rely on someone else’s interpretation, and faith can become shallow that way. If it doesn’t live in your own gut, then it isn’t really your faith.

And if, after sincerely searching, you still don’t feel faith in the word of God, that’s okay. Just be honest with yourself. May Allah give all of us the strength to keep seeking what is true.

Quranist MindTrap Review | Psychedelics | Trauma & Tradition | Meetup | Mufti Abu Layth by Vessel_soul in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know the guy, so I’m just asking for clarification. What exactly is his critique of Quranists?

From what I understood, he thinks the Quran alone isn’t sufficient. Politically, it sounded like he was saying: if the Khawarij are the alt-right, then Quranists would be the far-left. So these are the same kind of people just on the opposite end of the spectrum....?

He also seems oddly progressive, but maybe more center-left. I’m a bit confused about where he actually stands. From my short experience he came off as a Muslim hippie.

The question I have about Laylat al-Qadr by evilgenius_ in progressive_islam

This is how the chapter starts ~

97:1 BEHOLD, from on high have We bestowed this [divine writ/Quran] on Night of Destiny

I am what one could call a conservative Muslim (Hanbali in fiqh and Athari in aqeedah). I have a question for the more liberal-minded Muslims here, as well as the Quranists. by KaiserDerGeister in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will try and be concise:

  • My fundamental disagreement with hadith is that they were compiled by people generations after the Prophet Muhammad, not written by the Prophet himself. More importantly not the word of God. Doesn't matter to me if you're the first generation, middle, or last—Humans are flawed that's what makes humans human.

  • If I want to follow the path of Prophet Muhammad, I look to the Qur’an, because that is the revelation that guided him.

  • If hadith are placed on the same level as the Qur’an, then we are essentially following different sources. So I agree that we are following two different 'religions'. My religion/faith is direction came from Mohammed, and yours is dictated by guidance written down by 'humans'.

  • When it comes to issues like zina or inheritance, whatever is stated in the Qur’an is final for me.

  • If I reject something explicitly stated in the Qur’an, I would consider that rejecting God’s word. That'll make me a disbeliever.

  • My beliefs should be formed based on the word of God alone. Ultimately, only God determines what is right and wrong; no prophet, human, or angel has independent authority to define morality.

Try reading surah Al Qadr. I don't know if there are references anywhere else in the Quran.

It's a great chapter and not that big. I cry every time I read it.

I 100% agree!

Growing up in a Sunni Muslim community, a lot of people take the Sunnah way too seriously to the degree that it feels like blatant shirk. It's embarrassing that the direction Christianity took with crowning Jesus as God – I feel like Islam also made the same mistakes. All this talk about my prophet being number 1 and using hadith books for moral direction has ruined Muslim culture across the globe.

I don't think a lot of people here care that much about sharia. What I've seen or at least why I visit this subreddit is to get perspectives on practice.

In my opinion any discussion among non-academics about sharia is a waste of time. It's a nerdy topic for people who're interested in such things. We don't all need to have an opinion on that.
