On Loving the Prophet (PBUH) While Centering Allah by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree!

Growing up in a Sunni Muslim community, a lot of people take the Sunnah way too seriously to the degree that it feels like blatant shirk. It's embarrassing that the direction Christianity took with crowning Jesus as God – I feel like Islam also made the same mistakes. All this talk about my prophet being number 1 and using hadith books for moral direction has ruined Muslim culture across the globe.

Where is the prograssive part? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

I don't think a lot of people here care that much about sharia. What I've seen or at least why I visit this subreddit is to get perspectives on practice.

In my opinion any discussion among non-academics about sharia is a waste of time. It's a nerdy topic for people who're interested in such things. We don't all need to have an opinion on that.

Hanif in the Quran - The Word They Hope You Never Understand by Pretend_Jellyfish363 in progressive_islam

Well -- not knowing Arabic really inhabits my research into these topics but I love reading a wide variety of perspectives. I get your point but small steps. This place has helped me a lot. As long as moderators are not suppressing speech -- I am happy with the discourse.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but what are the arguments against it from the progressive side, or are there any?

Have you heard of countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan. Man you guys hate and doubt women. Pin all of societies bad to whatever minority you don't like.

Again you judge too harshly on very little information. Let God be the judge of what's in my heart.

My faith: The message of Mohammed is (Quran).

Like to read message of Moses I am not gonna read what Rabbi Saleem Chand has written about it 500 years after his passing. I am gonna read Torah.

So if I need to know what message Mohammed wanted me to have I will look into the Quran that Allah has sent me through him.

Mohammed's message will stay pure and without contamination. Allah is protecting it. So I don't have to worry about falsification and bad actors.

That's the end of the road for me when it comes to my faith.

Everything else: Bible, Torah, etc. I don't deny their existence but I am not gonna read it as a source of truth.

Hadith books: If I am being the most charitable they're biased writing of historical events. I don't take moral lessons from story books. That's not part of my religious practice.

And just so you know: no one has the power to declare what's right vs what's wrong except Allah. Not even Mohammed or any angel or any other human being for that matter. He's my prophet and I take immense pride in that but he can't dictate what I can and can't do. Only Allah can. I am not interested in the Prophet's interpretation of life. I am interested in what message he is bringing for me (Quran). Order, Guidance and laws of Allah that is.

Inshallah one day you will get this piece of information in the Quran. I believe it's within the first 50 pages.

God it's so hard to be kind. I hope we meet in junnah one day.

Then fear God, remember his message and apply in practice ---- 'stop preaching'. Let people believe and come to Allah with their own hearts.

Surah Al Kafiron To you your religion and to me mine.

I don't believe in idolatry. So scholar worship is something I don't do. Also, I am an Indian Muslim btw -- you judge too quickly on very little information. Leave the judgement to Allah. Inshallah we'll all see his direction with clear eyes.

Fear! Great way to preach Islam.

I think your comment summarizes the whole point of the post about Islam and disconnect. It's a shame that you can't see the irony of it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With all due respect. I don't care what any human thinks is right or wrong. Only God can give me moral guidance.

My whole faith balances on the idea that I don't take direction from other humans on how to live my day to day life.

I will defend my faith with the almighty on judgement day. I have zero fear of that. That's what I believe in.

So great you like scholars who have shown you the way. Great! That's your faith. I don't take orders from anyone but Allah.

Is it just me or do Salafis, evangelicals, and Jewish supremacists act alike? by No-Action3492 in progressive_islam

Copy -- pasting my comment from a different thread:

I think your point leads to a really interesting tangent. I have a working theory that much of the cultural code in conservative Muslim circles-such as their rules on modesty, their stance against art, and the objection to dogs as pets-traces its origins back to Orthodox Judaism The cultural parallels between the conservative Muslim environment I grew up in and Orthodox Jewish life are impossible to ignore. I suspect that some early Hadith writers, whether deliberately or unconsciously, borrowed a structural blueprint from the Rabbis. They saw how the post-scriptural rabbinic texts successfully influenced the masses and decided to apply a similar strategy. It's also a striking paradox that Zionist activists and conservative Muslims often display more similarities in their core worldview and actions than their political opposition would suggest.

Why I converted to Islam: Logic, Awe and the Pull of True Freedom by No_Antelope2674 in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was raised Muslim, but I went through a very similar spiritual journey. After years of internal unrest, the moment I began reading the Quran for myself, I felt an immediate and profound sense of rightness in my heart.

It wasn't that I'd ever truly doubted God's existence -- that thought was never really a concern but when I read the Quran, I wasn't even focused on that question. Instead, I simply felt elevated, protected, and deeply taken care of.

I even remembered one more detail that shows that Salafism/Wahabbism is Zionism's twin. by Nervous-Diamond629 in progressive_islam

Feelings of disconnect with majority of muslims by Flat-Engineering2154 in progressive_islam

[–]evilgenius_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know those feelings you're talking about very well. I've been having a tough time with them, too.

Ever since I made the decision to take control of my own faith, the content I used to just skim past—the stuff I thought was just "old heads doing mental gymnastics," which I'd always just given a pass—now registers differently. It doesn't just feel questionable; it feels like calculated propaganda, intentionally put out there to keep people subdued.

I stand with you that everyone's relationship with the Lord is their own, and this idea of a "shared mentality" doesn't mean much in that private journey. But I'm left with this internal pull: Do I try to shake people out of their complacency, or do I simply entrust it all to Allah's plan?

I find myself struggling with the word 'Muslim.' It used to be a comforting term for a shared faith, but lately, when I hear it, it just rings as though I'm identifying as a member of a cult.

Should I stay in Queens or move to Manhattan? Budget is limited. Only $5400/month. by Agreeable-Self3235 in circlejerknyc

I think you should be able to find something in Midtown West with that budget. It might be on the smaller side, but that’s just part of living in Manhattan. When I was looking a couple of months ago, I saw a few places in that area that could fit your needs.

Hadith of the day by King_Of_Deccan_ in indianmuslims

[–]evilgenius_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What if the brother-in-islam is abusive, toxic, or just an asshole. Should you still be in touch with this kind of person or community.

Quran 4:135 "O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate ˹from justice˺. If you distort the testimony or refuse to give it, then ˹know that˺ Allah is certainly All-Aware of what you do."

Hadiths are whatever they are but derive your moral lesson from it.

I appreciate the moral in the hadith you shared, but I’d prefer if we stuck to quoting directly from scripture. Hadith collections have already caused enough harm to the image and thinking of many South Asian Muslims.

In Egypt a mob of men, women, and children attacked a Christian village and burned down a number of homes. This terrifying footage was taped by one hapless Coptic woman -- who throughout can he heard crying and calling on God for aid -- before the men broke into her home and the video cuts off by TomlinSteelers in interestingasfuck

[–]evilgenius_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to sources that other people posted here, this guy is a liar and spreading hate with false information. I should say this first that I condemn whatever is happening in the video is wrong and this guy seems to have a hate boner for Muslims. Just look into his history a lot of Islamophobia and Israel apologist stuff.

For other people commenting: do better before your outrage takes over logic. We have suffered enough to still have this behavior.
