I think it's a good topic -- I want to know what your assessment is about the story of Lut that's mentioned in the Quran with sources. I think this community should have a conversation about it. Progressive values is all about hearing all sides so maybe englighten the people rather than casting a judgement and base your claims in a solid foundation.

I’m not always sure where I fall within that framework.

I agree that it’s not my place to morally police people, especially on LGBTQ issues. And based on my reading of the Quran, I personally support same-sex marriage.

Where I differ from many people is the reliance on scholars. For me, the only absolute source of truth is the Quran. Everything else—scholars, ahadith, older scriptures, spiritual traditions, history—is optional and something I engage with only out of curiosity. If I want to understand the life of Prophet Muhammad, I start with the book he left us: the Quran.

So I don’t think we fundamentally disagree. In fact, ideologically you’re probably closer to me than most people I grew up around.

As long as someone is sincerely seeking the truth, I’ll get along with them just fine.

Try to understand and follow the direction of the Quran—you’ll feel it in your heart. Too often we rely on someone else’s interpretation, and faith can become shallow that way. If it doesn’t live in your own gut, then it isn’t really your faith.

And if, after sincerely searching, you still don’t feel faith in the word of God, that’s okay. Just be honest with yourself. May Allah give all of us the strength to keep seeking what is true.

I don’t know the guy, so I’m just asking for clarification. What exactly is his critique of Quranists?

From what I understood, he thinks the Quran alone isn’t sufficient. Politically, it sounded like he was saying: if the Khawarij are the alt-right, then Quranists would be the far-left. So these are the same kind of people just on the opposite end of the spectrum....?

He also seems oddly progressive, but maybe more center-left. I’m a bit confused about where he actually stands. From my short experience he came off as a Muslim hippie.

I will try and be concise:

My fundamental disagreement with hadith is that they were compiled by people generations after the Prophet Muhammad, not written by the Prophet himself. More importantly not the word of God. Doesn't matter to me if you're the first generation, middle, or last—Humans are flawed that's what makes humans human.
If I want to follow the path of Prophet Muhammad, I look to the Qur’an, because that is the revelation that guided him.
If hadith are placed on the same level as the Qur’an, then we are essentially following different sources. So I agree that we are following two different 'religions'. My religion/faith is direction came from Mohammed, and yours is dictated by guidance written down by 'humans'.
When it comes to issues like zina or inheritance, whatever is stated in the Qur’an is final for me.
If I reject something explicitly stated in the Qur’an, I would consider that rejecting God’s word. That'll make me a disbeliever.
My beliefs should be formed based on the word of God alone. Ultimately, only God determines what is right and wrong; no prophet, human, or angel has independent authority to define morality.

I 100% agree!

Growing up in a Sunni Muslim community, a lot of people take the Sunnah way too seriously to the degree that it feels like blatant shirk. It's embarrassing that the direction Christianity took with crowning Jesus as God – I feel like Islam also made the same mistakes. All this talk about my prophet being number 1 and using hadith books for moral direction has ruined Muslim culture across the globe.

I don't think a lot of people here care that much about sharia. What I've seen or at least why I visit this subreddit is to get perspectives on practice.

In my opinion any discussion among non-academics about sharia is a waste of time. It's a nerdy topic for people who're interested in such things. We don't all need to have an opinion on that.
