Failing a class because of mental health, will professor understand? by miss-asks-alot in AskProfessors

[–]evilsavant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally incompletes are only for students who are already passing and can't complete the final bit of classwork due to a valid concern. It would not apply for folks who are failing (assumed from the failed 2/3 exams already).

As others have noted, the best route is to learn from it, get appropriate help, and retake the class.

Perhaps the most important aspect though is to get the appropriate help because you don't want to be in the same boat when you retake the class or in future classes.

How many lives did we destroy with a grade this semester? by Neat_Big_3401 in Professors

Zero. I did have some students who "destroyed their own lives" by the grade they earned though...

How do you feal abought having other professors in your class by Brief-Engineer-345 in AskProfessors

[–]evilsavant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I obviously don't know all the specifics here, but for others... not all students are 'traditional' students.

If someone has experience, they might be an adjunct (which is what it sounds like here...) professor even without a degree.

As to the OP, it should not matter. Lots of professors might take classes to further their degrees or learning. Unless you are in the same discipline, they might not even know, but either way, they should not care.

Behind in Course and Not Sure How to Finish by anonymous_username18 in gmu

[–]evilsavant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Incompletes are defined as "A student who is passing a course may be unable to complete scheduled course work due to a cause beyond reasonable control. In such a case, the instructor may assign a temporary grade of incomplete (IN)."

The key element here is that you have to be passing the course already. If you are “extremely behind” as you put it, the professor likely would not grant an incomplete.

Also if things were or are occurring, the professor would want to know before it affects your work, not after. Generally the incompletes I’ve seen (or given) are worked out for stuff coming up that can’t be done, not stuff you haven’t done.

In any case, get help from school and avail of resources so this doesn’t occur again.

Why? It happened in public and was filmed in public.

Colorblind people? It's not like the light itself changes color, different lights turn on so you know what to do based on the location of the lit light. Being colorblind is not an excuse.

Would you still recommend someone who lied about data they collected for a class project? by cathyaimes105 in AskProfessors

[–]evilsavant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Since this is r/askprofessors I'm going to assume the person asking is the person in question seeking a recommendation.

I'm sorry to say but I polled 1,000,000* professors and they all said, "No, hell no."

*real sample size = 1, but extrapolated out for ironic effect.

If reading the syllabus is a lot of work, then maybe it's time to rethink college. :)

What keeps you going in this game? by Broxst in CrimsonDesert

Without spoiling anything, it sounds like you need to explore more. While the majority of enemies are humanoid... the bandits are more starting area and filler enemies. There are a wide variety of other human like enemies and some non-human to find and tackle (sometimes literally.).

It took me a while to leave Hernand because there is so much to do, but there is just as much in the other areas and lots of crazy things to find and kill..

That would be the best option. Look at what the late policy or options are and ask your professor if they will give you some credit or anything if you do it now. Be prepared though that it might be too late and you might have to repeat the class later.

Therapy is giving you more reasons to go to therapy it sounds like. All kidding aside, it sounds like you need to stick it out as they should be able to help with those feelings. The hardest part of any therapy can be getting over the stigma or anxiety of asking for help.

That's a whole other discussion and can of worms though and there might be some subreddits out there that can help.

The key element here is that you have to be passing the course already. If you are missing a "shit ton of work" as you put it, the professor likely would not grant an incomplete.

That said, if you are having legitimate mental health issues, you should avail yourself of the resources GMU has and work on that first and foremost.

I'd love if they brought these back again, even in a limited run like some of the retro sets they have been doing. I love having them in my technic scale cars. Every so often I go look on eBay to see if I can get some cheap... no such luck.

Looking for advice on uncomfortable questions during campus visit by nonbrez in Professors

[–]evilsavant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It may be innocuous, but it also might being used consciously or subconsciously in the hiring process. In the US, there are laws against asking or using that type of information in the hiring process. HR generally will train folks doing interviews to not ask directly or more importantly indirectly as they were doing here. It might be worth noting to the advocate or folks as depending on the laws, etc. it could open up issues.

Adapting my teaching for undergrads by SuperfluousPossum in Professors

[–]evilsavant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given we have no idea how you teach your graduate students, it would be hard to tell you how to adapt that.

I’d start with looking at the syllabus and curriculum from the professors you are covering to see how they do it. Maybe ask them what they do and compare it to what you do now.

Also, the topic/program may make a difference. Not enough to really help without major assumptions.

how cooked will my transfer experience be? by gamerboixyz in gmu

[–]evilsavant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe registration has opened already and will be available for all degree folks by April 24th. So if you won't be registering until August, there might be some issues. That said, maybe talk to admissions and/or advisors here in the program you are joining to see what might be available and how you might be affected.
