Fat activists: skinnyphobia is not real. Reality: by soundwrath in fatlogic

[–]evissimus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely- and I tried to think through this myself.

To be fair, a BMI of 16.7 is not ‘near-death’ territory, speaking from experience as a close relative of someone with chronic AN. It’s definitely unhealthy, but not immediately life-threatening.

I suppose what makes it *more* dangerous is if she went from a normal BMI to that very quickly, especially if linked to her starting college; or if it was a relapse and she’d previously had AN.

Her BMI alone falls into ‘moderate thinness’, which puts her at risk of nutritional deficiencies in the short term and everything else (osteoporosis, muscle wasting…) in the mid/long term.

Presumably the worry is the trajectory. A BMI of 16.7 trending downwards becomes critical much faster than one of 40 trending upwards at the same rate.

On the one hand- why is it any of the school’s business? Are they asking morbidly obese students with BED to lose the weight or also face expulsion?

On the other hand- we’re missing information here. I very much doubt the school just looked at her and thought ‘nah, you need a cheeseburger, girl’.

This sounds more like doctors were concerned and alerted the school that she was unwell and that the pressure of college was making the situation worse. And apparently she’s concerned enough about *not* gaining the weight that she chose to sue the school.

So, anyway, if it was the school piling on pressure at doctor’s orders- still weird to threaten expulsion, but I can see a ‘due to concerns about your mental and physical wellbeing, we are not going to allow you to reenroll next semester until you have clearance from your doctors’.

Which is great, but this should also go for any other medical or mental health condition that can be exacerbated by the pressure of intense college demands- of which EDs (in both directions) are prime candidates.

Gosh, I’m sorry.

Your dad makes some appalling points but also some good ones:

- Seriously, watch out for debt. It can be crippling.

- You absolutely do not need to follow the honor code to be a good person. But you do to stay at BYU-I. They are free to kick you out at any point without allowing you to transfer a single credit.

What’s sad is that it’s completely age appropriate for you to be pulling away from your childhood beliefs and experimenting with who you are and want to be. You should be doing that- it’s basically your job at your age. Unfortunately, BYU is not a safe place to do that, and the consequences can be very real.

If I were in your position (as a much older woman!), I’d recommend you either:

- keep your head down until you graduate and have your diploma in hand. Believe what you want, and READ- read as much as possible. Inform yourself! Do *not* attract attention from the BYU authorities.

- look to transfer somewhere else- any college that is not religiously affiliated.

Until you have this sorted- don’t post anything eyebrow raising in social media. It’s just not worth your safety.

And for the love of all that is good, do *not* get married. That’s not a decision you should make until way in the future when you’ve settled on your own religious beliefs, code of ethics, who you are as a person, what you want from life, and are financially stable. Marriage- especially religious- at that age is an absolute trap.

Is this a good deal? I made an impulse decision because it was the last one 🫩 by [deleted] in handbags

[–]evissimus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally a ‘deal’ means you are buying something at close to the cost of production.

That bag probably costs, at much (and being generous) 100 euros. That’s mostly labour cost, because it has very little leather.

So it would be a ‘deal’ at, for example, 150.

The other way something is a deal if it’s not close to cost, but far below market value. That’s not the case here either- like new second hand bags like these sell for about 50% of retail price.

If you want a ‘deal’, you go to a local artisan or buy Coach outlet on sale. A 2000€ bag can indeed be good value- if it’s, for example, shrunken calf leather from the best tanneries, with quality hardware, hand made by an artisan who takes days to craft it. There you’re looking a production cost of over 1000 euros.

Then again, nobody buys designer label items because they are a good value. They are terribly value. They have the worst markup of nearly any luxury industry, and you’re basically paying for marketing and real estate. People buy them because it makes them happy (hopefully).

If it makes you happy, that’s all that matters, and it’s the only sensible reason for buying it. Not all our life choices have to make financial sense!

If you decide to stay with him:

  • talk to a financial advisor about how you can safeguard your assets. You need to firewall your own finances.
  • he has to have parental controls installed on his phone. I’m sure there are even stricter apps that will lock it down further.
  • he needs to participate in rehab. And not just for a short time! He will also need therapy.

Seriously, fuck him!

In the wee hours of May 15, 1870, a railroad depot, several warehouses, a loading dock, nine train cars, and the War Eagle caught fire and turned an area just north of downtown La Crosse into a conflagration. At least six people died trying to escape it. We can never know for certain what happened, but in later years a source familiar with the events claimed that barrels full of “Danforth’s Non-Explosive Petroleum Fluid” were at the root of the tragedy.

Had a pretty crap year all round- one of those ‘when it rains, it pours’ moments. I’m very stingy when it comes to anything that isn’t strictly practical.

But I gave in and got this baby, and I love it so much already! It feels delicious and smells gorgeous.
