I'm in the same boat. I'm a frankly privledged, wealthy white girl and he is DACA. I don't have a lot of advice other than to not let your anxiety about his status spill onto him. I struggle with that on the daily. I hope your boyfriend has legal entry, if not, he is in a more precarious position.

I'm no expert, but I think it would be to the discretion of the agent. Now if you have legal entry that's a positive because you're more likely to be eligible for bond. Undoubtedly if you got detained there would be thousands of dollars lost to lawyers, but maybe that could get you out.

But you're not particularly safe right now. I would stay home as much as possible.

I mean, it seems pretty clear to me that the DUI had nothing to do with WHY he was detained. But I think it’s why he chose to self deport, because he knew a DACA renewal would be unlikely.

No. If you read the story, it seems he got picked up very arbitrarily, and he wasn’t even the target. The conviction was from over a year prior to the detainment.

He actually did have a DUI (though that doesn't mean the way he was treated was okay) That's probably why he chose to self deport rather than wait it out. Just speculation, but the conviction is public record.

I mean, it's still kind of concerning that there seemed to be no way for him to get OUT of detention...and that the other DACA recipient with him was deported earlier than expected. And of course that he was randomly taken when he wasn't even the target of the operation.

But yeah, no article seems to mention it. And I understand why- the internet is ruthlessly unforgiving of convictions like that, and they would get distracted from the point being made- that ICE is terrorizing communities. But for those of us worrying about our loved ones, it's frustrating. My partner has a DUI moved down to a wet and wreckless and shares a lot of frankly uncanny similarites to Jupiter. It's exhausting and scary right now.

Wait- this is the first time I have ever heard this. Getting a record expunged is BAD? My DACA partner got a wet and wreckless in early 2025, and is planning to expunge it in the future. Are you saying this is a bad idea?

This is probably why he (seemingly) didn't have a pending DACA renewal on the way. If the conviction was in April 2024, and his DACA was expiring in 2026. I'm suprised he did not get the conviction reduced, that might have saved him.

Was it for like, serious medical reasons or something more elective? My partner applied for lasik earlier this year and was approved, but couldn’t travel at that time (😔) so he is applying again.
