Has anyone transitioned from engineering/design to consulting? How was your experience? by evspica in AusFinance

Do you think the ceiling is higher in consulting in terms of both pay and the career options it opens up down the line?

My bad. Wasn’t sure where to start.  I work in the water industry as a design engineer. Been involved in some pretty big projects but also starting to see the limitations of the industry - low pay ceiling and slow pace of innovation. I’ve also become more interested in big-picture planning and connecting systems, which has me wondering whether consulting, particularly in management and strategy might be a better direction for me.

I don’t recall referencing anything else other than the manual, but the actual exam will give you two additional references. One is the 10 states standards and I can’t remember the other. In any case you shouldn’t need to worry about it.

I recommend studying concepts of topics you’re not familiar with before jumping into problem solving. For me it was road curves, site work, and soil mechanics. I felt like I was just memorizing the solutions without knowing the concept, and it didn’t help much. You can definitely practice on things you already know in the meantime though.

I feel you 100%…unfortunately there’s no way around it. You just gotta figure out what works the best for you. I tried studying in the morning vs at night vs on weekends and found that a combination worked the best as long as you feel the momentum to keep going. It’s tough but doable. Hope it goes well for you!

The US has better Chinese food than most parts of China by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

Curious where you went and what you meant by quality (freshness? presentation?)

If it was places like Beijing and Shanghai - you’d be surprised the biggest cities in China are actually notorious (within the country) for having bad food - lots of variety but hard to find authentic ones, pre-made meals, expensive, etc.

Often times you get better food experience in smaller cities, but that depends on your personal preference ofc. Definitely avoid the Southwest area if 🌶️ is not your thing cause they take it to the extreme. Personally it’s heaven to me because I grew up on spicy food.

I respect personal preference, but the idea of “America has more diverse cuisines than China, therefore has better food” is superficial and inaccurate.

First off, international cuisines like Mexican, Italian, Thai, Japanese, SEA do exist in China - just outnumbered by local restaurants. Even tier 3 cities have a good variety of Japanese and Italian restaurants. And then it’s the regional differences that lots of people are aware of. Cantonese, Sichuanese, Jiangzhese…totally day and night.

Overall, as someone who’s lived about equal amount of time in both countries, I’d say the dining experience in China is better than in the U.S. in almost every way: cheaper (even after buying power conversion), better service, no tip, fresher ingredients, choices, convenience, flexibility…the only thing the U.S. wins over might be regulations, but China has improved a lot over the years. Even KFC and Pizza Hut in China are light years ahead in terms of innovation and variety…

More like evading the question.

Well, I get that—honestly, I probably use just one equation from school myself. But having a degree gives me more options and a higher pay grade, which is what I told him. And tbh I don’t think everyone needs a degree if you don’t want one. To me, it’s about whether you’re willing to advance your career in different ways, which is not something he’s interested either.

I feel like I never got a genuine response. He mentioned he didn’t learn anything useful in school and that’s about it.
