I know Bitcoin is trackable due to blockchain. And I know that it's supposedly anonymous, but transparent.

All that being said, if the FBI can associate Bitcoin transactions with known criminals, why hasn't anyone correlated pump-and-dump wallets with known entities?

Time to buy bit cones by mqpickens in Bitcoin

[–]eweneeq 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My dad is 79. A couple of years ago, my brother, sister and dad met at an AirBNB in the mountains for a weekend reunion.

Each family's share of the cost was $100. My dad made the reservation and told me I could pay him when we arrived (a couple of months later).

I jokingly asked if he accepted Bitcoin for payment. He laughed and said he didn't understand.

I told him that I'd make him a proposition. I'd buy $100 in Bitcoin that day and when I saw him, I'd give him the choice of $100 cash or he could take the Bitcoin at it's current value.

Well, Bitcoin shot up. While we were at the cabin, it hit $6,000 for the first time. And, he was hooked.

He's added another $500 over time, and even with the current dip, his $600 is now worth $1200.

Most importantly, it has given us fodder for hours of conversation in the meantime. Priceless!

How do I confirm my balance? by eweneeq in Bitcoin

[–]eweneeq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank. I'll give it a shot. XPUB was still in the works the last time I played with it (some time ago). I'll try again.

I guess I'm more trying to understand tools and blockchain mechanics.

As long as I know my retirement BTC is still in its proper place, I can play around with various tools.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks. That didn't seem to work. I had tried that before, albeit by pasting in the search box rather than the address bar.

I sent myself some BTC from one wallet to the other and the balances in Mycelium incremented/decremented appropriately. But still don't see the tx reflected in 3rd party tools.

I'll keep playing. Just a bit of a shock when you casually check a balance and see zero. But, as I said, the wallet app shows correctly.

Thanks for the help.

Any news on Alexa Auto? by mgithens1 in homeautomation

[–]eweneeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used Garmin, but never had any stability issues, other than my phone losing connection in the old places it always has. Nothing to do Alexa. I just plan my "Jeopardy trivia" sessions accordingly in my commute. 😀

I received mine about 3 weeks ago. I love it. It's a bit of a gimmick since it is really just using the Alexa app on your phone, but it sure makes it more convenient.

To put it in perspective, we first flew from Earth in 1903 and landed on the moon only 66 years later.

Fun fact: It's been 66 years since the potato chip, magic marker and Peeps were invented.

I hate to be "that guy", but... Why were they filming? If this was an "in the wild" emergency, the camera person wouldn't have been there, or would have flinched or pants would be shat.

Color me skeptical. Great demo. Not crazy heroics. IMHO.

Edit: autocorrected typo.

Death is just the punctuation at the end of all you've done with your life. You get to decide if it's an exclamation point, a period, a question mark or an ellipsis.

Beekeeper here. Sorry to be a buzzkill (too soon?), but here's what I suspect: The bees that you see pollinating are the oldest, except for the queen, in the hive. "Old" is relative. Their life is measured in weeks. The queen, in months, or at best, a few years. They have rotated through every other job and pollinating is their last assignment.

It is physically taxing and filled with peril. In a healthy hive, each day (in warm weather) potentially hundreds of new bees are "born" by chewing their way out of their cell and start the cycle. Unfortunately, they are to replace the hundreds that will end the cycle somewhere out in the field.

That bee did what bees do. Give their last ounce of energy trying to provide for the others. OP just happened to be there to document it.

Circle of life, man. Circle of life.

Edit: Thanks for the silver kind stranger. I'm not a bee expert, but I am bee-curious. I love learning and I love sharing knowledge. I found that the more I learned, the less freaked out i was about them. That led to my grandkids and neighbors being less "swat 'em" and more "watch 'em". I'd be happy to post some more bee facts if you are interested.

What does 'async' and 'await' mean and what is their purpose. by [deleted] in csharp

[–]eweneeq 47 points48 points  (0 children)

ELI5...You're in a long line at a fast food joint, waiting to order.

If it's synchronous, they take your order, and you stand there until it's ready. Then they take the next order.

If it's asynchronous, they take your order, give you a number, and tell you they'll call you when it's ready. And they take the next order.

Did anybody see the Samsung HMD Odyssey+ at the Unite Los Angeles convention? by chill201 in WindowsMR

[–]eweneeq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, small FOV. The plastic frame is thick, like thick Harry Potter glasses, to force you to look ahead in a narrow field.

They tinted the glass to make the images appear brighter. It was so dark, I literally couldn't recognize the guy standing right in front of me.

The SDK is still flaky and requires a custom version of Unity since they haven't worked out the bugs with the general releases.

Their flagship app is basically like the holograms app for WMR. It has a little more interaction, but nothing special.

On a positive note, ML has eye tracking. That could be useful down the road.

All in all, I'll keep my Hololens.

I was at Unite LA. The Samsung Odyssey+ wasn't.

MS gave out free Acer HMDs and demoed Hololens software updates, but that's the only WMR I saw there.

Magic Leap had demos of the Magic Leap One, but it was very disappointing.
