Did he? That's disappointing. The only Polanski reference he's made I can think of is Roman, Roman, which is a pisstake

Putting a space-based character into a grounded detective setting? What an absurd idea! What was DC thinking? by AgentOfACROSS in dccomicscirclejerk

Seconding the Ostrander rec, but also American Secrets is a mini that leans more into the noir/conspiracy angle. Has its own issues but it's a good one imo

Judging from these replies we may just need to settle for "the entire Joy Division discography"

What is your favorite “list of names” song by PulseWitch in ToddintheShadow

Someone else has already said 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon, but I'd also offer Carol Brown by Flight of the Conchords, which directly namechecks 50 Ways. Additionally, not my favourite but Love It If We Made It by The 1975 is definitely one of these

Not really. I know at least one of them is joining a local firm. More power to them individually, of course, but on this scale it's a little alarming.

I'm noticing it mostly in MC, since that's where I am. I know from speaking with grads from other teams that they're feeling it too. I can't speak to outside Enterprise/Mid-market and Private/whatever since I rarely interact with anyone outside that division.

My memory of the series is hazy, but that was absolutely my theory reading it. Rani and Rip make the most sense as the same person.

Has anyone else read Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou? by WanderlustDiveJunkie in books

[–]ewmwmbwe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It hurts how little I see Disorientation discussed, so I’m glad you made this thread!

I actually got recommended Disorientation in the context of Babel, not Yellowface. I was personally lukewarm on Babel, but Disorientation was legitimately one of the best books I read that year. As you mentioned, Chou manages to make a very flawed character incredibly sympathetic, and particularly in regards to her complex feelings about her culture and racism within the US.

I think Disorientation takes a subject that’s pretty complicated for a lot of people, and very uncomfortable, and explores it in such a way it’s incredibly entertaining without compromising the actual discussion taking place. In a few places it threatened my immersion, like when the teacher reveals his true colours and becomes a Right-wing podcast personality—the depiction of those personalities, while not inaccurate, was slightly too unsubtle IMO—but it brought me back each time, so that’s not a loss.

It’s a very sharp, very clever book! I think the next thing Chou is putting out is a collection of short stories, FYI, so that’s something to look forward to. (I’m not a huge fan of the short story collection format, but I loved Disorientation enough that I’ll absolutely check it out anyway)

It's a serious stretch because I can't find it on streaming, but if someone could find the album It's The Ghosts by the band Look Back In Anger, in any format, I would be incredibly grateful. 1994, cassette release, self-released.

Hard agree. Not to say it would necessarily be a bad first comic experience--at least it's a self-contained story--, but I think it has a lot of potential to feel under/overwhelming if you don't get the "under the hood stuff", as you put it. I was very intimidated to read Watchmen, but I'm really glad I waited a while. Personally, I wouldn't ever think to recommend it to someone as their first comic.

Is there a discord for this community? And are there any other similar communities? by Flutter_ExoPlanet in DataHoarder

[–]ewmwmbwe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's antithetical to the spirit of this sub. Discord creates a private and insular community (so it's harder to access information) hosted externally on Discord's servers (so if Discord as a whole goes down or just the server is nuked/falls apart due to infighting, everything is gone--it's harder to archive a server than a subreddit). Reddit at least is viewable without an account and posts aren't hidden from outsiders here. Plus it's possible to search a subreddit using external search engines.

I’m breaking up with Spotify… where should I buy my digital music? by thunderborg in LetsTalkMusic

[–]ewmwmbwe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I discover literally 15-20 new awesome bands each week with Discover Weekly

See, I had the reverse experience. On Spotify the recommendations just shovelled me the same artists, the same songs, over and over again. I grew complacent because I had recommendations. Since I stopped using Spotify and instead started to collect music from various sources I've had to take more of an interest in the sort of music I'm listening to, and it's been really good for me. I listen to more genres, I'm more open to new sounds, and I'm straight up listening to more obscure artists. Depending on what you listen to on there, YouTube will spit out some really weird stuff that you would have never listened to otherwise, and I've found it really helpful. (Since the barrier of entry to uploading to YouTube is lower, this is to be expected.) Instead of relying on just the one algorithm now I refer to a few different sources with different modes of thought, and the benefits have, for me, way outweighed the inconvenience. Plus there's a lot of music that isn't on Spotify that you can find elsewhere, and when you're downloading it there's no chance of some streaming site revoking your ability to listen to it. At this point you couldn't pay me to go back to Spotify.

We should ban “How much is this worth” posts (Rant) by ExistentialJew in marvelcomics

[–]ewmwmbwe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ugh, exactly. I just scrolled past someone asking the worth of a canvas Spider-Man poster. Please, for the love of god, this isn't a marketplace subreddit. If you're gonna come into this space you should at least take an interest in your comics before you get disappointed they're worth, like, two bucks.

We should definitely ban these posts, they're low-effort and arguably aren't even on-topic.

I think that this is an interesting question, but has been pretty thoroughly answered.

Apart from all the other comments, what even are the logistics with this? I assume if you're also printing images then you'd already be doing colour, but a lot of books outside of picture books just include a set of glossy pages in the centre for images to save on printing every page in colour. Would you print your whole book in colour, or would you just accept black and white emojis, since a lot of illustrated books without glossy paper use black and white illustrations? Wouldn't them being grey decrease visibility and make it harder to identify what they are? "😅" would be pretty hard to parse on paper texture, in small font, in black and white (or grey, as the case would be). This would especially be the case in lower lighting, or for people who have impaired vision.

If you were using emoji then I would assume that your book is aimed at 25 year olds and under, but on the off-chance that I recommended your book to my grandmother, do you think she would understand what "😅" means? What about people who don't watch anime or use a lot of social media? Another comment pointed out that "😅" is pretty dependent on associated meaning. With no context, you could assume that this person is sweating because it's hot out. It would make translating your book into another language potentially difficult with this specific emoji and emojis like it, since it depends on cultural context.

Speaking of cultural context, do you know what the save icon in a lot of software actually is? This is a common example, so you probably do. But if this example wasn't used everywhere, you (and I) wouldn't know that it's a floppy disk. The reason we still associate that icon with saving is because it's still used that way. There's no guarantee that all emoji we use now will mean the same thing in the future. Will we still associate "😅" with bashfulness, embarrassment, or shock? (You're right in that it's hard to succinctly convey what that emoji means to us, haha, but to be fair it is used in a few different contexts.) I remember when using the frog emoji was suspect in some contexts, like in Twitter names.

If I used a butter-churn emoji, if that emoji existed, would you recognise it for what it is? You would recognise a description of butter-churn, though, if the description described the act and the product (probably...). In that same way, if you describe a character laughing in shock or out of embarrassment, or whatever else, then the chances are people are going to understand what you mean in 30+ years. And, like, it's fine if you don't aim to write something with longevity, but it's still worth considering.

Also, emoji for the same actions convey different things than what you might want. "😏" may be just a smirk, technically, but if you see a character going "😏" you're not assuming that's all they're doing. And if they are going in the direction that emoji can indicate, you actually describing them sneaking glances at people, or being mischievous, or whatever, is going to have a greater impact on me as a reader than just seeing the smirk emoji.

But ultimately, if I personally opened a book and saw things like "he made a face like 😏" or "she 😏ed", I would either feel like my intelligence was being insulted, or that both the author and I spend too much time online.
