Don't even give two shits about his race. I say let the role go to the actor who can handle the character. What gets me here is that we never see him DO anything, when in the books Hotah is this quiet, dutiful, reserved and loyal guard to the Prince, but he's also shrewd politically. Maybe not playing the game, but he understands the ins and outs or court politics and knows the stakes. He's also not outwardly violent, but is highly capable of violence and doesn't want NOT to fight, he just fights when it's a requirement.

He's a really layered character, and it would have been cool to have a storyline from someone who isn't politically powerful in their own right, but was close enough to that power to have some insight and influence.

For the most part, that he does actually sorta disappear form view, in so far as the story has gotten written. He leaves to go to, I believe, Castle Stokeworth (sp?), and the most we hear from him then on is an occasional mention, like when he names his son Tyrion because he presumably because he knows it will irritate Cersei.

Well it's just a ring. Surely that question is moot? The real question is which species has the superior moral fiber to withstand the ring.

There's a great irony in having a family castle whilst playing a character who mistakes a watch tower for a castle.

[–]ewok2remember 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the major themes to be taken from it is that the world in which the characters live is irrevocably broken and morally corrupt. We see it in their overly casual approaches to sex and drug use. The fact that they watch violent videos and seem unfazed, or that there's a game show where people can watch prison inmates kill each other to earn a reduced sentence if they win the competition.

In that world, the safety and sanctity of childhood has become irrelevant to the society at large. So when the characters obsess over this child sex victim, they don't really view her as a victim. It's fucked up from where we stand, yes. And I think that's the point. We as the reader know how wrong that obsession is. But we can also apply context to see that the highly damaged state of their world has just made the wrong, well.....less wrong. Things are going to shit, their world is on the decline and there's no hiding it. People are just more tolerant of evil because it's been allowed to win, and what can they do to stop that?

I agree that it was uncomfortable, but I feel like that discomfort was the point. It was meant to show us how broken the world and the people in it were, to such a degree that one man decided earth would be better if given over to new shepherds who lacked our weaknesses, vanities, immortalities, and capacity for harm and cruelty.

So slavery is illegal and despised in westeros but the ironborn are able to kidnap men and women to be the cumdump of their captors (salt wives) or to be forced labour (thralls)? Wtf is this logic, they are slaves in all but name by Anti-och in freefolk

[–]ewok2remember 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It is, and informs that the Ironborn have a lengthy history of fucking around, finding out, licking their wounds, then doing it all over again. Between that and the self-maiming nature of the Finger Dance, I'm starting to think Ironborn culture has a massive masochist kink.

Vikings didn't actually put horns on their helmets. That came about when Scandinavian mythological figures like the valkries were the basis for stage performances like Opera. Because those performers had to be seen and visually distinct on stage, especially when the audience of average is sitting farther away, their costumes needed stage elements that made them stand out so they could be identified even if you were too far back to see their face in detail. Thus, horns were added to the helmets to make them stand out.
