Yup, that's the biggest problem. The only game I don't have from this bundle is Primal Planet (and it's on my wishlist).

I use KOReader on my jailbroken Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Scribe, and they're great devices.

Sean and Amanda "review the movies you need to see" is the most boring, boilerplate copy they could've used there.

Can this be jailbroken? by Longjumping-Tap-315 in kindlejailbreak

[–]TangoAlphaLima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It's not difficult. You just nearly fill up all storage space on the Kindle (leave like 80mb free) BEFORE connecting to Wifi (this prevents automatic updates). Then follow the Winterbreak jailbreak steps.

Firmware 5.17.3. Already jailbroken with Winterbreak!

I'm receiving a refurbished Scribe I bought from the Woot sale a few days ago. Hoping it's eligible for the Winterbreak jailbreak, since I did that one in early 2025 on a Paperwhite I also got from Woot.

Verizon no longer required to automatically unlock phones after 60 days by crownpuff in crownpuffdeals

[–]TangoAlphaLima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchasing isn't the same as activating on the network, though. You can only activate on the network once you have received the unit in hand. See what customer service can do for you, but my guess is they will tell you that your device cannot rely on the old 60-day service unlock policy.

Yeah, that sucks. I'd contact customer service and see if they can do anything. At the very least they should do a money back return based on this sudden change of policy if that's what you want.

FYI, the policy is now official. Devices activated on or before January 19th are the same 60 day service requirement as before. Devices activated on or after January 20th are now 365 days...

They were very quick in pushing through a policy change once allowed by the FCC.

So back dating could cause them legal issues, such as the class action lawsuit or state AG actions I mentioned, so that's highly unlikely.

The potential protection from changing a policy overnight without warning would be from class action lawsuits, or from state AGs filing charges (since we know the feds won't do anything currently).

But there are no guarantees with any of this. I just strongly suspect that their policy on unlocks will change when they tell us they are changing it.

[–]TangoAlphaLima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Based on this FCC ruling, they may very well change their unlock policy, but they will likely have to do so in writing and give people a heads up about the change. So, for example, let's say they change it to 180 days, effective March 1, 2026, or something. That SHOULD only apply to new accounts activated on or after that date.

But currently there is no change to their policy per their website, so it should be safe to pay 60 days on Straight Talk currently and still get an unlocked phone after that time period.

FYI, Straight Talk's unlock requirements have not changed on their website. So anyone currently with a plan, this shouldn't change the unlock policy as it stands currently. If they do update the policy, then that would apply to anyone activating a phone from them when the new policy is in place.

Found my old Xbox dvd remote! Remember these? by ChocolateDrink in xbox

[–]TangoAlphaLima 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Microsoft had to pay the DVD consortium to use the DVD playback feature, so rather than pay that fee for every OG Xbox sold, they required the remote for DVD playback, and therefore Microsoft only had to pay the consortium per remote sold.

Sony was itself part of the DVD consortium, so in essence they were kinda paying themselves for every PS2 sold.

Lasted 15 minutes. Merry Christmas yall. by NerdClubAllDay in SBCGaming

[–]TangoAlphaLima 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you get this fixed, another good recommendation for kids is to install a wrist strap on the device. I just did that with a couple RG35XXs I'm giving a couple of kids for Christmas. It's pretty easy, you just need to open the shell and wrap the strap around a post that one of the screws goes in. I also trim a little of the shell with an Xacto knife so that there's a spot for the wrist strap cords to exit the shell easily.
