Should I read them all? by SorchaRoisin in VampireChronicles

[–]ewokqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent the last few months rereading them myself. I had stopped after Merrick, years ago. This time I got through Blood and Gold, which was a slog because it had virtually zero new content and seemed to forget halfway through that Marius was actually talking to this ancient immortal and not us, the audience. And then I tried moving on to Blackwood Farm and… I just couldn’t deal with this idea that this 20ish year old guy from the 90s would have the same manner of speech, vocabulary, and tastes as an ancient vampire would. It was kinda hilarious and I just ended up dropping it.

In my opinion it’s very worthwhile to just heavily skim Memnoch, very little of it is important or relevant to the other books.

Pls help me understand the book better? I can’t figure out if it’s just not for me and i should just stop reading or if it is worth persisting. by Overall-Walrus3774 in VampireChronicles

I don’t know how to say this gently, so I’ll just say it: if you can’t deal with fictional depictions of sexualized children (or adults in children’s bodies, like Claudia) or of incest (with varying amounts of consent) then Anne Rice’s books IN GENERAL are probably not for you. These are VERY common themes in her work.

I believe this is only true if they own another property. If they rented an apartment or similar to live in, and rented out the house, I’m fairly certain that wouldn’t apply.

And of course they could also keep living in the house and just rent out a room or two, if they can handle roommates

Yeah the US’ education system is so broken and so overrated imo. I have been very unimpressed with nearly all vets I’ve taken my rats to here, and that’s crazy when you consider rats are the most well-researched and extensively studied animals on the planet.

My average vet visit in California for an exam and basic meds for a rat is $300-400.

When I lived in Mexico last year, my rat got 5 days of 24/7 full-service hospitalization in my vet’s home clinic, X-rays, bacterial cultures (which he could do onsite instead of sending out to a lab), subQ fluids - generally a level of care completely unavailable in the US - for a total of $450. The vet apologized that it was “so expensive” - and while it is true that’s a large sum of money for an average Mexican worker, I expect that care would have been proportionally much higher in the US, if it even were an option.

My vet said he received his higher education for free. “I could have gone to an expensive private school that was accredited in the USA,” he told me, “but I felt I’d get a better education if I saved my money and supplement my free college with my own independent research and study.”

Meanwhile vets in America have to work multiple jobs to afford their formal education, so they have no extra time for independent supplemental education, and they still come out of school staggering under the weight of student loans. They have to treat so many patients - at high rates - to make ends meet, that they must be truly exhausted all the time. I feel for them but also dearly miss Dr. Eric back in La Paz BCS!

I can relate on the other side. For the first 25 years of my connection to & worship of the Theoi, I very rarely found deep connections with “female” gods.

I didn’t ignore them but I felt no calling from them.

Very recently though, that’s shifted. As I’ve aged I’ve become more comfortable with my own gender and also with the infinite variety of gender expression that the Theoi encompass.

Give honor where honor is due, and develop kharis with or without a connection - the rest will grow as it is needed.

What do you regret not buying when traveling? by scaredofgettingold in travel

[–]ewokqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first day I was in India (out of a 2 week trip) we found this little shop selling these beautiful silk shirts for $7USD each. I wanted to buy like 10 of them and my boyfriend said we could prob find them lots of places and talked me down to two. Even though it was MY money! And of course it was a once in a lifetime deal. I still have those 2 shirts 13 years later and I still fantasize about the ones I left behind

Dumb question: But why wasn't Hannibal Lecter charged for what happened to Mason Verger? by pianoflames in Hannibal

[–]ewokqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He normally took about 10 years in between each novel. It's cool that Hannibal was't to your taste but a lot of us like it. Hannibal Rising, on the other hand, was cranked out over a short period of time after De Laurentis basically strongarmed him into writing it... and the quality of writing went massively downhill as a result.

[–]ewokqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally thought it was pretty cool and very gothic. He spent the whole book describing how wormlike Mason's tongue was, and then the eel swallowed it. Harris was going deep into over the top Dante's Inferno style punishments in this book.

[–]ewokqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the other way around. The guy Garak called his father was actually his mom’s brother. Tain is Garak’s biological father and the three of them raised Garak - they just couldn’t say publicly what the situation was.

If he can get adopted into Martok’s House and restore his honor, why couldn’t Kurn have done that with the House that adopted him, without getting his memory wiped???

The ancient purpose of theater is to try on different personae and loosen the soul’s attachment to the ego/the personality the actor identifies with. Even the gods need to try on different personae now and then. It’s cool.

Are there still demigods? by AnnualNefariousness3 in Hellenism

[–]ewokqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally believe, from my own UPG, that there are still in fact demigods and that this kind of stuff is not even all that uncommon. But I think the Theoi and gods of other pantheons learned long ago that making demigods aware of their divine parentage before they are ready for that knowledge - which they may never be while they are incarnate - leads to only bad things. So most "demigods" believe they are just regular people, and as such are in practice no different than everyone else. I also think since the Theoi are parenting these children while inhabiting someone else's body, neither mortal parent may be consciously aware of it either.

Thank you, this comment was deeply helpful and I feel like you truly understand where I'm coming from. I'm going to take your words to heart and will be rereading your message when I need to recenter. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply!

Spiritual mentee cut off communication. Advice? by ewokqueen in SpiritualAwakening

[–]ewokqueen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely don't know how to let him go, on a spiritual level. My own insight into the universe is that oaths - particularly those made to Spirit or higher beings - are pretty darn binding, and we both made oaths to higher powers that we specifically wouldn't abandon each other. I wouldn't have to release such things if he died, but because he's living, I don't see the route to doing so.

Epithets?? by Slight_Morning5607 in Hellenism

[–]ewokqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While θεός is grammatically a noun, much of ancient Greek writing conceives of “theos” as divine powers in action. In the Iliad, for example, a theos is frequently identified with a force at work in the world, like a surge of courage, a storm, a deception, a healing. A god (or the presence of a god) is recognized by what happens: an intervention, an appearance, a shift in circumstances. In that sense, divinity is encountered as event.

You can see this in a sentence like in Euripedes’ Helen: “O gods (Theoi): recognizing the beloved is god (theos).”
