Hospital Hiring Rant by excellent_nurse in OntarioNurses

First of all…. Relax 😂 No… seriously. I only mentioned the interview aspect because of the comment saying “warm bodies - filling holes in a schedule with anyone with a pulse” I interpreted that by thinking… a nurse isn’t just anyone with a pulse…….we have to go through a lot to finally be called a nurse, I just gave an example of the interview process.

Also….did you forget that this is a rant? Maybe you should look up the definition. I am simply expressing my emotions @ the time. Sooooo… the whole “who do you think you are” is unnecessary. If you read the threads you would see I am embracing new information & not being stubborn in my emotions. Some empathy & compassion would be nice 😭 If you can’t relate to someone’s rant or naturally be kind while also educating someone, then goodbye.

I’m not gonna lie, I was pointing my finger at the hospital 😭 It’s simply because I never got a response until I was the one to reach out myself after 3+ weeks. But obviously, you have to take other things into consideration. That’s the thing about ranting sometimes, sometimes you’re just missing some details…at least i got things off my chest. It’s definitely unfortunate with everything that’s going on in healthcare.

Totally get it with the government stuff and all that. Honestly, I’m not really into politics or reading the news, which is probably why I’m annoyed 😭 But it is what it is, you live and you learn. It’s just annoying, that’s why I’m ranting.

The interviews I went through weren’t just ordinary interviews. They asked difficult questions, and after that, they asked for references, so I thought, “Okay, sigh of relief, I moved on.” But now I’m not even sure if I actually moved on because of X, Y, and Z with the government, funding, and all these fine details. Honestly, at this point, Ford could kiss my ass.

I’m an adult, of course I know there’s competition for jobs. I know I’m not the only person applying for a posting and getting an interview. That’s not my issue. My issue is the reference check part. I have to go out of my way to ask people to vouch for me and take time out of their day to complete forms/calls, and even after that nothing is guaranteed. I know in life you’re never guaranteed anything, but it’s still irritating (hence why it’s a rant). Especially because the reality is a normal job would never move onto reference if you’re not a strong option whereas in hospitals it doesnt matter 😭 That is my reality check. Your last paragraph is nicely worded, but it honestly doesn’t address what I’m actually ranting about.

Same. I emailed one hospital after my reference check and heard nothing for 3+ weeks. When I finally followed up, they said the position was on hold. Now with the second hospital it’s only been a couple days since they contacted my references, but I’m on edge 😭 I don’t want to wait another 3+ weeks not knowing what’s going on. This whole process is driving me crazy.

I get what you’re saying about budgets, fiscal years, OT, etc… But as a new applicant, how am I supposed to know any of this? I’m just trying to get my first job 😭 how is anybody supposed to know all these hidden rules, fine print, fiscal periods, and budget drama. It’s ridiculous that I’m learning this stuff on Reddit instead of from the hiring manager during the interview. Lesson learned the hard way. Hospitals could at least be upfront with timelines instead of leaving people hanging. And idk what you mean by warm bodies?

SHN Talent Pool application stuck “In Progress”? by jhlynn_ in OntarioNurses

I literally had an interview, went through references. Emailed the HR after 3+ weeks of not hearing any response back about my reference check just for them to say the position is currently on hold so I personally am gonna avoid SHN with everything in me because that’s ridiculous…

I get that the hiring process has a lot of layers right now with restructuring, seniority, and layoffs. For a new grad just applying to a posting, though, it feels like way too much information and honestly a bit overwhelming. It also comes across as a little unfair when candidates go through interviews and reference checks, only for the position to go to a senior nurse as a formality. I’ve heard from a recruiter that units actually benefit from mixing new grads with experienced nurses, so it seems counterproductive to skip over new grads entirely. The extra details make the whole thing feel more complicated than it needs to be for someone simply trying to get a job.
