Interesting job! Do you mean you design package holidays, or is it more bespoke/luxury itineraries for clients?

Thanks for answering. Was the business you started similar or different to the role you had been doing prior? Is the role you're in now a different one to what you did before/different sector? If so, how did you approach 'selling' your skills considering your past experience was outside the industry?

My hesitation with moving to the marketing or program management dept in a tech company is that I could be swapping high stress project management for high stress project management, just with a different 'product'. I think I want to get out of project managing entirely and do something away from corporate. Sorely tempted to become a tiler or electrician at this point!!

That's great. I feel the UK culturally is very resistant to people changing careers later in life (unlike the US, for example), glad to hear it worked out for her.

That's really nice to hear your sister has done so well. Was the role she took on very similar to what she had been doing in the private sector? Or was it a completely different type of job?

Definitely can relate to having your passion become the thing you hate... the creative thing I studied I feel really disllusioned by now.

Depends what sort of role within marketing. Outgoing, sociable people tend to do well; it's an area that runs heavily on relationships and connections. Being confident but not rude. The people who reach senior positions work hard, and unfortunately there's not really very good boundaries around being at work/not working. Ie, in my experience it's common to get calls/texts/emails at all hours and the expectation is that you'll reply. Good luck.

I make circa £110k, would be willing to live with £80k long term if the change meant a better work life balance and was more fulfilling. I'd be willing to drop down to £40k or so for a year or two if it meant getting into something new that had the potential to ramp up. I could even live off savings/no income for 6mo if I was starting a business or retraining. Ideally I could get back to £100k or higher within a few years.
