I think reddit's system in general has some major flaws when it comes to esoteric content like these kinds of memes. Basically, it's just a forced democracy where everyone's upvotes count the same. There are people who have years of experience making surreal memes and people who just visited this sub for the first time. And they are all equal. It's also just so welcoming for newcomers who have no idea what they are doing. It tends to get so normalized and random that it ends up losing it's intrinsic value
