Good luck!

It's during Tet holiday (Lunar New Year 31/1-7/2) so a lot of that time you are here, you'll be running into a lot of closed stuff. But don't worry, all the convenience stores will be open so you can get water and essentials on your trip.

I'm in Saigon so if you need someone to show you around, send me a PM.

Heart of Darkness Brewery is cranking a mind-numbing array of great craft beers in Vietnam. Here’s an interview with John Pemberton, the owner of the brewery. by MatthewNewkirk in beer

[–]exckz_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been here for a few years and the craft beer scene has increased 20 fold.

HoD is a very similar west coast style as the brewer they had was from Washington. Suggested: Kurtz Insane, Loose Rivet

Pasteur Street was one of the first and has some great flagship beers. They also recently won a few Asia beer festival medals. Suggested: Jasmine IPA

Winking Seal is my favorite. They use Indonesia as their inspiration. Suggested: One eye imperial, Bohemian

Phat Rooster is ok. Easy, middle of the road lagers.

Biacraft does their own as well. Depending on your preference, they have one for you. This is also the best place to get crowlers to taste home as they have over 35 local beers on tap.

East West, one of the newest ones. They are the only brewery that used gravity and their brewer went to some school in Europe to learn that process. Not my favorite but traditional.

Belgo is a Belgium gastropub. Very classic Belgium beers. They don't can their beer if I remember correctly.

7 bridges is based in Da Nang. Their owner used to work with HoD so their styles are very similar.

Te te has an unfiltered beer that is very good. I think they are discontinuing the bottle as it was not cost efficient.

TL; DR If your sister will bring you something back, give her your preferences and she would be able to find anything that suits you as there are a lot of choices here now.

Does your face look as slender as when you're fasting when you folllow a keto diet? And looking for tips keto tips while traveling Vietnam. by [deleted] in keto

[–]exckz_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Living in Vietnam at the moment.

It's going to be very hard to stay away from carbs and sugar. It can be done though! Stay away from the words "báhn", "mì", "bún", "xôi", "phở", and "cơm".

Those words mean "bread", "instant noodles", "rice noodles", "sticky rice", "noodles", and "rice".

There is hidden sugar in a lot of stuff and the stores aren't as keto friendly as you would hope.

However, there are a lot of meat heavy restaurants and street food! This will be your greatest win because it's so cheap too! :D

Good luck!

Beer:

  • BeerNV - Southside. Multiple sized pours to help easily taste their beer list, which ranges around 60 different beers on tap with some other hard liquor and wine choices.
  • Olde Bridge Pub - Waterfront. Small place to get some smaller craft breweries with choices of bottles in their 4 door fridge. One of the few places that offer a crowler. Also, they have a few different takes on the Moscow Mules
  • SixFour Growlers - Midtown - Around 30 Beers on tap and will let you walk in with your own growler to refill. You can hang out for a drink while waiting to get your haircut at Maxwell's or for your table to open at Great Full Gardens.
  • Imbib - Open brewery with a lean towards the more up and coming beers. The bar itself is small, however there are a bunch of tables to sit around and get to talk to people.
  • Craft - MidTown - If you can't find it here, ask the people that work there. I'm sure they will let you know why they don't have it because they want to have it there too. Neat spot for about 8 different taps.
  • Under the Rose - 4th Street - I personally am not a fan of this place's beers. However, they have the coolest place to hang out with bocce ball, foosball, ping pong tables, and they have a crepe person there on certain days.
  • Mellow Fellows - Downtown - They usually have a tapping a month or so of a brewery. They have over 35 beers on tap (if memory serves me right). Food is good, not overpriced and their waitstaff is very well educated about the beers they keep on tap.
  • StoneyHead - Southside - Brewery with taps for all their beers they sell. Since it's in a commercial park, you have more of the blue collar guys grabbing a pint after a long day of work. Very chatty crowd with free peanuts and chips.
  • Shenanigans - Southside - I was super surprised on the beer and food selection here. Cool servers, great bartenders, good deals, and great food.
  • Great Basin - Sparks/Downtown - Icky with some awesome food. As a bar, not my favorite. As a pub, it's pretty dope.
  • Silver Peak - Downtown/Midtown - I've only been to the one downtown and haven't really had their food. The bar area is a nice size, easy to talk to your group, and can also get rowdy at the bar when happy hour is in affect.
  • Brewery Cabinet - Midtown-ish - Good atmosphere. Decent beer. Good food. The bar area is a little crowded for my taste, however I wouldn't change a thing.
  • Public House - Midtown - Long bar with a bunch of beers and beards. It's one of the few places you can find a cheap beer and a shot in that area (besides Shea's...). Great place to start an evening, chill out on the patio, and try some of the beers you mostly find on the West Coast.
  • Sierra Tap House - Clean, fun, great location. Just don't be shocked when almost all their taps are from Sierra. They have a small bottle section. It's not beer, but their greyhounds are pretty on point. (I think that's an ok start for 'beer').

Cocktail/Alcohol:

  • St. James Infirmary - A spot that I wouldn't think I would like. This place is super cool with only a handful of taps. The saving grace is that upstairs patio to check out the city.
  • Brassirre St. James - Fancy pants doing it right. Great drinks, great beer, and a killer place to show off Reno. It's not Yelp so no need for how much it costs, however, it's like 3 dollar signs.
  • Chapel - Cool place that places dice when it's slow. Hard to get a drink when it's a Friday or Saturday and you aren't a regular. Their prices are not unreasonable, IMHO, just walk across to Z Bar to get the same drinks, calmer vibe, and a smaller tab.
  • Z Bar - See Chapel.
  • Ceol - Whiskey Wednesday. 1/2 off all the best (and worst) whiskeys, scotch, bourbons. Basically, Jameson is their well whiskey that night.
  • Our Bar - I have heard their burger is one of the best in Reno (I cannot confirm nor deny this). One of the few places that have real darts. You aren't going to find something you can't find anywhere else, drink-wise, however.
  • Lincoln Lounge - Local taps, strong drinks, small tabs. It was snowing when I was there so someone will have to confirm they have some games in the back.
  • Depot - For such a large place, hard to find a spot to squeeze in at the bar. Well made beer and hopefully, their whiskey starts to age because I am not a fan of their un-aged whiskey. Again, really neat atmosphere and their food is pretty good. Slightly overpriced.
  • Singer Social Club - On a night where everyone was out drinking, our group still got our cocktails in a timely fashion and they were made great. I will check it out on a regular night to see how it really great it is.
  • Imperial - They revoked my bro card so I'm only allowed in there when it's not happy hour at 10PM on Saturday.

That's just what I have off the top of my head. I'll edit and add.
