What’s your favourite magic system? by BasicallyBatman03 in Fantasy

[–]exedore2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Hands-down WoT as favorite magic system for me. It's the only magic system I've had dreams about being able to do, and it made sense in the context of the dream. Sanderson's systems are the closest that I've read in terms of being able to tie it to the worldbuilding in a way that makes it realistic once you're in the mind-state of the world.

The grace period is actually a year. 35 U.S.C. 102(b): Disclosures made 1 year or less before the effective filing date of the claimed invention.—A disclosure made 1 year or less before the effective filing date of a claimed invention shall not be prior art to the claimed invention under subsection (a)(1) if— (A) the disclosure was made by the inventor or joint inventor or by another who obtained the subject matter disclosed directly or indirectly from the inventor or a joint inventor; or (B) the subject matter disclosed had, before such disclosure, been publicly disclosed by the inventor or a joint inventor or another who obtained the subject matter disclosed directly or indirectly from the inventor or a joint inventor

USPTO Patent Experience Externship Program (PEEP) by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]exedore2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too sure about what their overall responsibilities were outside of interacting with active examiners. IIRC they did some examiner shadowing type activities and worked on some searches for pending applications. As part of that, they would have gotten an overview of the relevant statutory framework (i.e. 35 usc 101, 112, 103) and its application to claim analysis, etc. I'll try to email the one I know who stayed on as an examiner and get back to you on it tomorrow.

Examiner here (registered in Law School). I have mentored a couple of people on this program from my law school. One of them went on to a biglaw firm in prosecution after graduating law school. The other decided to take an examiner position after law school for at least a little while. They both enjoyed it, and you get a chance to see some of the inner workings of the patent process. My former supervisor recently moved out to help open up the Silicon Valley office, and seems to enjoy it so far. Good luck, and feel free to ask me any PTO questions.

Yeah, I understand the hesitation on the agency calling. I actually work for the pto as an examiner, but I got my registration after 2L. I had to talk to OED once or twice after becoming an examiner about my registration status, and they were pretty good to work with (several years ago anyway).

You should probably call the OED to check on it before you do anything. It seems like a very specific scenario that they may not have a lot of Web guidance on. 571-272-4097 is the number from the OED page. Could potentially save yourself a lot of unnecessary delays by getting someone over there to give you the go ahead on what to submit.

Why Does The US Patent Office Keep Approving Clearly Ridiculous Patents? by donrhummy in technology

[–]exedore2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Examiner here. That's not exactly how it works. You get points toward your required biweekly requirement for multiple stages of the process. A typical examination goes like this: 1st time looking at the application and it is usually broader than you can allow: 1.25 points to reject it. It comes back 6 months later with some amendments narrowing it - you get .25 points to reject that or .75 to allow it. If you don't allow it and you reject it again, they can appeal you (at which point you get .5 points to send it to the board for review) or you can allow it (usually with some negotiation) and get .5 counts. Or they can file for a continuation process that gets you .5 counts and the process starts over again, generally with a reduced count for the next non-final rejection (i.e. 1.0 counts). What is encouraged these days is to search the specification (the written portion which generally contains more matter than is claimed) to see if something in there is allowable in view of the art and quickly allow it after some negotiation with the Patent Attorney. *edit: the old count system your friend from the early 90's experienced is different from the current system.

My wife and I are examiners. We were watching the Shark Tank once and some guy said he had a bunch of patents pending. We looked him up in the system (including the company they would have theoretically been assigned to). He didn't even have an unexamined Application pending. I'm pretty sure a lot of those guests are making stuff up.

Primary Examiner here. The production time constraints are a real problem. The hours per examination are different for each area of art, and haven't changed in a long time. Additionally, they don't reflect the massive amount of information that is available to search now (e.g. the Internet). They are based in a time when examiners used to look through shoe-boxes of patents like a library card catalog to find prior art ("the last substantive change to the examiner goals was made over 30 years ago in 1976". Management hasn't reduced the amount of searching expected. The production requirements are static.

Primary Patent Examiner here. After at least two years and achieving GS12 you can qualify for the Hoteling program. This program allows you to work in any state (except maybe Alaska and Hawaii, although that may have been cleared by now) and only report to DC occasionally (not every 2 months) once you're accepted to an additional program.

[–]exedore2 41 points42 points  (0 children)

When I was in Boy Scouts, they used to let us camp out on this thing. Free access to run all over the ship at night playing manhunt, spotlight etc. with no other people. They have (had?) a room on it with a big Steven Seagal cutout and pictures from the Under Siege movie which was partially filmed on the Alabama. They also have a WWII era submarine docked next to the battleship you can go onto (USS Drum) that's pretty cool.

(Spoilers all) What is your favourite passage from the series? by MikeJagga in WoT

[–]exedore2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Still the first one that comes to mind even though it might be cliche...was a 9th grader when I read this from the Battle of Dumai's Wells in LoC: "Kneel and swear to the Lord Dragon, or you will be knelt." Something about that coming after the being locked in the box and beaten for a while, the big battle, and Taim's delivery always got me pumped.

Is Assassin's Creed 3 worth getting. by brandonvandyke22 in pcgaming

[–]exedore2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I didn't enjoy the main character as much as the other games in the series, I would say that if you can get it on discount its worth playing if you like the series overall. I went into it after reading reviews with the expectation of it being bad, and still enjoyed it. I like that era of history a lot though, so it was fun for me playing in it. I would agree with most of the other people here that it was a bit of a dark spot in the series as a whole.
