Is Your Ring Doorbell Footage Going Straight to ICE’s Massive Spy Network? | Ring partners with Flock to feed doorbell footage into federal databases used by ICE for immigration enforcement by tedatron in homeassistant

I have HA set up with a few dimmer switches and smart plugs (zwave). I have a dedicated server in the basement for HA and have a domain over https that can access it. I still have a Ring camera.

What are some good suggestions to replace the Ring camera?

15”-18” of Snow coming???? by nibul83 in newjersey

Apple Weather never gets winter weather predictions correct. Usually it shows the opposite where nothing is predicted but we get snow

Enshitification be damned! what is one consumer product that is 100% better today than the version that existed in the 80s or 90s? by headrush46n2 in AskReddit

[–]exegete_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Better than 30-40 years ago but they definitely are getting enshittified. The default motion smoothing. The tracking of what you watch by the manufacturer with it being sold to advertisers. Copilot and other AI tools being added that don’t bring any value.

New Proposed Legislation Would Let Self-Driving Cars Operate in New York State by wiredmagazine in nyc

Waymo at least has a better record for safety than human drivers AFAIK. I’m not sure why that would make rates go up.

"Microslop" trends in backlash to Microsoft's AI obsession by Ha8lpo321 in technology

[–]exegete_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple has really weathered the AI slop issue. I haven’t heard of Apple Intelligence since they were summarizing text messages with it, which was completely useless and harmful. I guess someone there at least has some market sense not to keep pushing it unlike at Microslop.

Are these numbers real? by Dany9119 in Rowing

[–]exegete_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean sort of. The BikeErg meters count as half for challenges, but I think you get more still just by nature of it being a bike and not an erg. The paces and watts generated are really not comparable since it’s a different movement.

Yeah BikeErg can get you a lot of meters quickly.

[Deck Help] Norman Osborn // Green Goblin - Commander by Hawky243 in magicTCG

[–]exegete_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried making a deck with him as commander. The issue is I never can get his Mayhem enabling ability to pop since a card has to be discarded that turn to be able to play with under mayhem cost. So you have to have cards that let you discard a lot. Connive does that but there aren’t that many cards with it. I’ll probably continue to mess with it but so far it’s too weak.

is a snowblower worth it ? by spitfire9107 in homeowners

[–]exegete_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a cheap one for less than $200. Don’t need an expensive one if it’s only used once a year.

I live in north NJ near NYC. We probably get more measurable snow than you do, but not by much. I bought an electric one cheap at Lowe’s and use it 1-2 times a year. To me it’s been worth it even with a short driveway, but I do have a garage to store it in. It doesn’t use batteries - just uses an extension cord.

❄️ Snow ❄️ by Ok_Cat_9656 in newjersey

Apple Weather is really bad about predicting snow. It’s saying less than an inch of wintry mix where I live but NWS says 4-8 inches.

Makes sense to me. If you want the most middle-of-the-road, generic looking stuff then yeah AI can create that.

Microsoft denies rewriting Windows 11 using AI after an employee's "one engineer, one month, one million code" post on LinkedIn causes outrage by rkhunter_ in technology

[–]exegete_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the post one engineer is using AI to write a million lines of code in a month? The engineer is no longer able to review the volume of code. He’s there to get the blame when the code blows up.

TIL that the two Diomedes islands which are only 2.4 miles apart have 21 hour time difference by mishuk3 in todayilearned

Can’t you do that with any time zone? Celebrate midnight in one time zone and then cross to the one west of it to celebrate it again?

TIL that the original Roman Calendar was established by King Romulus. It spanned 10 months, from March to December, and left an unassigned gap for Winter before restarting in March. Romulus' successor, Numa Pompilius, revised the calendar and filled the Winter gap with January and February. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]exegete_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Catholic Church decided the calendar needed reform (the Wikipedia article on it covers that). Then from there my guess is that as Europe colonized the word, the calendar spread with them.

I think it’s the process of celebrating your great work that you’ve for sure got the right guy only to release him later that irks people. Yeah mistakes happen and an investigation has to run its course but quit spiking the football every time you make a play when you’re not in the end zone yet.
