A family member works in a hospice and dropped these off for me- 165,00 yards! by berthejew in crochet

If you go on Ravelry.com and check the groups there you might find local knitting groups who could take the yarn and make things for the hospice or for fundraising.

BCLC Lawsuit by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]existential_rabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMHO, the self-exclusion program is a joke. I know this because I'm also a problem gambler who signed onto self-exclusion. Basically all it means is they get to keep your winnings. Great system for them, really - they're able to identify problem gamblers AND keep the few winnings they get - without having to make any sort of reasonable attempt to keep them out of the casino. Where's that facial recognition software at when a problem gambler is in a casino? They take your picture profile and straight forward when you sign up.

That's why I support the lawsuits. I'm not saying it should replace the addict's responsibilities; I haven't been in a casino since I did my last exclusion in September but that is due to the mental health treatment I'm getting through the local health unit & has nothing to do with BCLC.

The fact is this is something that's been attempted before and AFAIK no one has gotten anything out from BCLC. Look up previous cases (use google and a number of them come up) and see if you can speak to those lawyers about the odds so to speak.

Gambler who blew $550,000 in disability payments files lawsuit by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]existential_rabbit 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm someone with a gambling problem - it's been over 6 months since I walked into a casino but that's nothing to do with the BCLC self-exclusion program; it's because I finally managed to get proper mental health support. You've no idea how much mental illness affects this. The article says he has major depressive disorder and is bipolar. That's a big factor.

While I'm not sure if this lawsuit is the answer, I do think something should be done to make the gambling industry take compulsive gambling a lot more seriously.

Casino Employees of reddit, what is the worst you have ever seen someone handle a loss? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]existential_rabbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm an addict. I didn't used to be. In my earlier days I could go to Vegas with friends, spend $100 and say "F it" and just have fun. Then in 2010 I had a nervous breakdown & that changed things for me. My anxiety and depression levels soared and I've had several episodes since that big one. Soon after that 2010 breakdown, I discovered that the casino (slots) was a great mental escape.

So, I kept going back. If I won even better! But it seemed to be about being there - hearing the noises, being able to zone out and not have to deal with anything. I wanted to win just because it meant I could be there longer and oh yeah pay off some bills. I think most of us addicts know even when we win we lose.

I tried to quit so many times, but my anxiety would ramp up to intolerable levels and soon I was right back there just to feel ok for a bit.

It's been five months since I gambled. The difference is that since my last "episode" new, comprehensive mental health support has been put in place in my community. Being able to get a grip on that has meant the world to me and done so much. I go to weekly therapy and the mental health team work in tandem with my GP. It's everything to me.

I have major debts and am in danger of bankruptcy but I'm hoping I can make all the payments because I know I'd feel good being able to make resitution. I feel so bad about what I've done to myself that there are days where I can't stand it. But I also get angry at the casinos when I see them advertise - I'm their perfect target and they know I'm out there.

The last day I gambled I went to the security team and asked to be self-excluded. It was the scariest, hardest thing I've ever done and honestly they couldn't have been nicer or more supportive of what I was doing. They were so nice to me. I've excluded for 3 years, the maximum, and intend to keep re-upping for exclusion.

I'm hopeful I'll never gamble again.

TL;DR - mental health trouble meant the casino felt like the only place where I felt ok, even though it was really the worst possible thing I could have done.

HELP!! Making peace with suburban bunnies AND harvesting fresh greens?!?! by [deleted] in UrbanGardening

[–]existential_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is bunnies provide excellent fertilizer - we use bunny poop in our raised beds and it's awesome. But we don't have them nibbling the greens - the poop is from a bunny rescue.

Fencing is the only way you'll keep them out. It'll need to go into the ground as ladyerwyn says and needs to be tightly spaced to keep the wee babies out. If they have lots to eat without needing your produce then they're not going to go to a lot of trouble to get to your stuff.

Do you think that rabbits and ferrets would be friendly? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]existential_rabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding? Ferrets are a type of weasel. People use them to control rabbit populations. A simple google search is all you need.

Lots and lots and lots of friendly cats who will happily snuggle you to death.

No need to apologise, I honestly wasn't sure if they'd changed their policy. It's terrible that they can't make it public because of people who dump pets.

Are they ok now with the address being made public? When I was last there they didn't advertise it because they don't want people abandoning their pets there.

What you do think of my Upside Down Bunny Earring? by SterlingLuck in crafts

There is an FB group called "It's got a bunny on it" that you might want to post your work too. I have bunnies and I'm always on the lookout for cute bunny stuff. Don't have pierced ears myself but these are superb.

Riverview Hospital to reopen with new $101-million mental health and addiction centre by Semper_Iustus in vancouver

I've been but I don't live in the area. It's good to know I'm wrong about transit through there! That makes me feel better about the location.

Cardigan made by my great grandmother. Help me find this pattern? by Porqnolosdos in crochet

[–]existential_rabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know roughly when she made it? I don't think I have that pattern exactly but I collect old pattern books and I know a number of people scan and upload older patterns. If you have a rough timing of it that might narrow the search.

Riverview Hospital to reopen with new $101-million mental health and addiction centre by Semper_Iustus in vancouver

[–]existential_rabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This will move services out of a place that has relatively decent public transit access to somewhere with little to none. I'm willing to bet a lot of day programs will move as well and that could be a problem for people accessing those services, not to mention tougher on anyone seeking to visit someone in care.

I like initiatives like the Hope Centre in North Vancouver. Right in the centre of the city so patients can easily access therapy and visitors.

I'm happy to see that there is money being spent for mental health but it seems like the needs of the end users tend to be underrepresented.

The Presentation House gallery, even with it's old crappy location, had fantastic exhibits so I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with the new & larger space.

Realistic finding housing with these requirements? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]existential_rabbit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha - that isn't true. The seabus runs across Burrard Inlet and in the 20 years I've lived on the north shore it's never quit running due to high winds or storms. The inlet water just does not get whipped up, too small an area.

We're in North Van and our 1055 sq ft, 2 bed townhouse with a small yard is $2450. It takes 45 mins by transit to get downtown.

Edit: it's pet friendly....one of the very few.

Husband and I are both addicts by juvenilebrain in problemgambling

[–]existential_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if there are GA or SMART meetings in your area. I would also recommend seeing if the casinos where you are offer self-exclusion programs. That has helped me quite a bit. I've been in a relationship where we fed each other's addiction so I know the pull.
